Global Sports Podcast Network. Hello and welcome back to the Daily Fulham Podcast, part of GSPN. Today's obviously Wildcard Wednesday, which means we get to talk about pretty much anything we like, which is the best part. Honestly, it's the best part.

Fulham Academy Challenges

00:00:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
And this week we've chosen to sort of brush over some of our academy prospects that have come out of the club in the last couple of years. I'm joined today we by Jack.
00:00:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
Jack, how excited are you to go through, well, maybe not too excited, given how some of them have left, eh?
00:00:38
Jack Kelly
It's a chat about how good our academy can be and is, but also a chat about how quickly players' heads get turned by other clubs, basically.
00:00:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, as tail as old as time. I mean, even if they're not out of the academy, it feels like big clubs come along and scalp us. So it almost hurts even more when when they're so yeah sort of integral to us. I think the first player that I can think of that my dad always loved when I was first going to games and as an academy boy, there's also a funny story about how he joined the club under our fire. But it will be that night. um I think I owned I owned that.
00:01:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
was it baby blue all blue baby blue kit with that night on the back when i was a kid so i was an absolute a lover of that night ended up going to city didn't he um i believe or did he come from No, it was Villa.
00:01:29
Jack Kelly
the West Ham of

Player Loyalty at Fulham

00:01:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
Villa. He went to Villa. He went to Villa. I knew it was blue-ish. He was always a good player for us, to be fair. I mean, the the funny story I'm alluding to is Alfired, because it was a semi-pro club that he came from, and we didn't have to pay them, Alfired sent them 30 tracks.
00:01:31
Jack Kelly
Villa.
00:01:44
Jack Kelly
no
00:01:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's brilliant. I mean, probably the only good story that's come out about Alfired recently.
00:01:51
Jack Kelly
Oh, yeah.
00:01:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
um But that night, like he played 150 times for us in the Premier League. I'd say a pretty good servant from anyone coming out of the academy. You don't really see that much anymore.
00:01:59
Jack Kelly
Yeah, no, as that night was a player who I never really got to properly watch due to just my age and and when I started sort of going to Fulham and supporting Fulham, but from what I have heard and what I have spoken to to other fans about is he was an incredibly solid centre back, good servant to the club, good professional and yeah, obviously a very sort of proud moment for the club to to have him come through and I am Yeah, I never really got to watch him much in the flesh, maybe just ah less than 10 times, but yeah, he's always very fondly spoke of when when we reminisce about the Fulham centre backs of yesteryear.
00:02:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
For sure.
00:02:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
And then if we're talking about youth, you always think about how young are they when they actually come in. Right now you've got players like Mounieri coming in for Arsenal, breaking the record of youngest player ever, like 15 or something stupid.

Matthew Briggs' Journey

00:02:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
But we've done it twice, technically.
00:02:57
Jack Kelly
yeah i remember him bursting onto the scene at like this very 16 year old sort of player i think he came from like made stone was it or maybe he oh maybe i'm wrong in that um no he broke up he broke onto the scene um he played some premier league minutes and then he sort of just
00:02:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
The first one was Matt Briggs. Do you remember much about Matthew Briggs?
00:03:23
Jack Kelly
fell off a little bit but now he is I believe involved with the club as an academy coach which is to see he lost his way a little bit it was a story about him getting into some trouble and stuff I seem to remember reading and and now he's sort of back on on a clear path and obviously he still wants to work within football and I think that's sometimes what can happen to players when they break through so young.
00:03:48
Jack Kelly
I think now is actually sort of better because you've got lots of people around you who can sort of support you and um you know tell you what what's good and what's you know not good to to do in at that age but I think when Matthew Briggs was coming through I don't think there was necessarily that support network around him and
00:03:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:04:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
Not in 2007.
00:04:06
Jack Kelly
No, and maybe he ended up making um a wrong decision here or there, but but it's like it's good to see him like sort of back and i'm working at the club as well, which is which is fantastic to see.
00:04:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I think it's it's always good. I mean, especially a guy that's been through trouble to actually want to come back and work into football again. I mean, I think that's a really great, great story, obviously. Fulham then, he had so he had the record at 16 and however many days, like 100 and something.

Harvey Elliott: Departure and Impact

00:04:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
always They always go so granular with it, makes me laugh. But then we we broke it again with, well, do we even talk about this player anymore, Harvey Elliott? It's the one academy player I think I've seen him come back to the cottage and just get booed so mercilessly.
00:04:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
We talked about not liking booing the other day, but I'd say I'm quite a big fan of that one.
00:04:49
Jack Kelly
Ha.
00:04:55
Jack Kelly
It's um it's an interesting way with with Harvey Elliott because he's actually made something of his career. you know when when he When he played for Fulham at age, I think 15 against Millwall in the EFL Cup, I remember you know hit him, I remember being at the game and and him singing so singing the songs and and him getting his own song.
00:05:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:05:16
Jack Kelly
i just And then obviously he came on against Wolverhampton Wanderers as well. And I just think, um he may have left at the first chance he got and actually um it was a huge shame at the time because we were very very excited about him coming through we were going to get relegated and we thought oh actually he could actually be a shining light for us at the championship the next season but no he went to to Liverpool and to be fair to him
00:05:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:05:39
Jack Kelly
That move probably worked out for him. you know he's playing I know he's injured right now, but he's playing minute to the Champions League, the FA Cup, the Premier League, scoring big goals in the Premier League as well.
00:05:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:05:49
Jack Kelly
And not only that, but he's actually making a name for himself in the young England, under 21s as well. i think you know, at his age. And and obviously that the deal was a tribunal and it and it and obviously got a little bit messy between us and Liverpool.
00:06:02
Jack Kelly
And I think there was some sort of ill feeling between the two clubs about how Liverpool got that deal over the line.
00:06:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:06:10
Jack Kelly
But ultimately the kid had the talent, his attitude was terrible.
00:06:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:06:15
Jack Kelly
You know, he you know he was, you know, lots of allegations came out about him and his family.
00:06:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. but
00:06:20
Jack Kelly
And he was you know seen mocking Harry Kane and and things like that. And very unlikable character. And actually, you know, I remember being at Anfield a couple of years ago, we lost 1-0 and Harvey Elliott came over and it was Harvey Elliott and Fabio Carvalho were both on the bench. They both came over to warm up, which is basically where the away end is. I remember Fabio Carvalho getting collapsed but some boos and then Harvey Elliott coming over and getting booed by everyone. And I think he sort of lapped that up and and sort of enjoyed it.
00:06:52
Jack Kelly
and But yeah, every time he's come back to the cottage, it's been pretty much a cauldron for Harvey Elliott, and I'd imagine if he plays at the cottage later on this season for Liverpool, it would be the same.
00:07:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, it's it's it's really weird, the whole dynamic that Fulham has with Harvey Elliott now, because I'd say it's probably the only probably the only academy player that people genuinely don't like wish bad on. like they've not Not so much injury, but just to play badly. Is that is that more, do you think, to sort of cope with the fact that he was so good at one point that we all sort of thought that? Is that just a bit of copium to try and make ourselves feel better?
00:07:29
Jack Kelly
I think it was the fact that he left at the first chance he got um when you know when normally if you're you're brought through at such a young age, you you have some sort of loyalty to that club and go, oh, this is the club that gave me my chance. Therefore, I'm going to repay them by staying and playing a lot of football and hopefully contributing to to scoring goals and and accumulating points. But Harvey Elliott didn't even really get to know us as fans, get to know the club.
00:07:58
Jack Kelly
um Well, I mean, he was at the club in terms of the academy, but in terms of, we never got to see a relationship blossom between the fans and and the and and himself. So when he went to Liverpool, I think a lot of people were just like, well, what what a complete waste of, you know, but they thought it would flop, but what a waste of money.
00:08:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hmm.
00:08:16
Jack Kelly
and and And actually, to be fair to him, he actually is a very good player.

Matt O'Reilly and Youth Transfers

00:08:21
Jack Kelly
I mean, he is a really good player.
00:08:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah Yeah, it really hurts to admit that.
00:08:24
Jack Kelly
Yeah, but the thing is, I think that Harvey Elliott hate was was very much prominent to the first two, three years after he'd left the club. I don't think anyone's that bothered about it now, really. Yeah, they'll boo him because of the history, but I don't think Harvey Elliott, definitely not for myself, he's not living rent free in my head.
00:08:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
Oh no.
00:08:44
Jack Kelly
I don't think he'll be living rent free in many fans head right now. I think he's just part of, he's now not part of that furniture of that Liverpool team. So it sort of doesn't, mean like, it doesn't I don't even flinch if I saw him score a goal on the TV.
00:08:55
Jack Kelly
Like, I don't stay up at night thinking, God, what could have been if Harvey Elliott stayed? It's it one of those ones where it's just, yeah i just met I just moved on really. And I think everyone else has.
00:09:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
Is there a player that you do think about that for?
00:09:08
Jack Kelly
ah um Is there a player Not really any, oh yeah, Matt O'Reilly, Matt O'Reilly for me, that's the one.
00:09:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:09:18
Jack Kelly
Even Fabio Carvalio, like he's, Burt Bridges now by going to Brentford, we might even see him play at the Cottage on Monday, but Matt O'Reilly for me, just because, because it was Scott Parker, and I feel like if it was Marco Silva at the time, he would have played him, and he would have blossomed as the player he was.
00:09:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:09:33
Jack Kelly
He's gone to Celtic. ah Sorry, he went to MK Dons, did very well, went to Celtic, and suddenly he's a Premier League player. And now he's at Brighton, of course, and and people forget about that. He's at Brighton now and because he got injured in his first game.
00:09:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:09:46
Jack Kelly
So he actually has made it to the Premier League, when definite definitely when he was coming through in our academy, he was one of the brightest sparks, but Parker chose to play his brother-in-law over him in Haryonta.
00:09:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:09:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
Harry Arthur. To be fair to Harry Arthur, he did score like three ridiculous goals that season.
00:10:01
Jack Kelly
Yeah, that's true.
00:10:02
Jack Kelly
and
00:10:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
But like, yeah, no, I'd much rather have seen Matt O'Reilly.
00:10:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
I mean, God, what a player he's turned into.
00:10:07
Jack Kelly
Mmm.
00:10:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
I mean, he's getting international caps at Denmark now.
00:10:09
Jack Kelly
Mmm.
00:10:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
One, two, tre I mean, I know it's in Scotland, but he won two trebles in Scotland, which is still very impressive. Sort of followed in the footsteps of another Academy prospect, Musa Dembele up there. um Celtic really seemed to get the most out of Fulham Academy prospects.
00:10:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
I don't know what's going on.
00:10:24
Jack Kelly
Yes. Well, the Musitevele one actually did really bother me at the time, because it was it was a 500K fee he went for. And at the time, you know Fulham had a Ross McCormack and Mr. Dembele partnership, which was working wonders.
00:10:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:10:38
Jack Kelly
And actually, I thought, you know even if you know Ross McCormack left, I thought Mr. Dembele could be one of them the best strikers that we've produced in in in many a year, but um leaving for Celtic, then going to Leon.
00:10:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:10:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:10:52
Jack Kelly
You don't really hear much about him nowadays. I genuinely, he's completely off the radar.
00:10:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
He's not... Do you know where he is?
00:10:57
Jack Kelly
Is he in Saudi Arabia?
00:10:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, but you know who he's playing for?
00:11:01
Jack Kelly
Uh, I'm not sure.
00:11:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
Stevie.
00:11:03
Jack Kelly
Oh, hello? Who?
00:11:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
Stevie, um Al Etifak.
00:11:07
Jack Kelly
Oh, is he? Oh, right. It's Steven Gerrard.
00:11:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
He's with Marek over there, actually.
00:11:13
Jack Kelly
They would have been in the academy together actually, so a friendly face.
00:11:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, wouldn't it? Yeah.
00:11:16
Jack Kelly
but yeah mu said that bell That did bother me when he went to Celtic actually and then obviously he went to Lyon. I remember him scoring in the Champions League I think against Man City or something like that a few years ago and I think during lockdown in like a quarterfinal, he was in the same team as Kenny Tete at the time.
00:11:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:11:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, wouldn't it?
00:11:31
Jack Kelly
um So yeah, that that really bothered me because I thought that Fulham were on the up. but Well, well, well, under Suviti Kalevich, we're on the up after that 15-16 season, thus proving to be the case when we finished in the playoffs.
00:11:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:11:42
Jack Kelly
But Dembele was not part of it because he left on a, not an almost free, but he, you know, he sort of ran down his contract. And I think they got him on a pre-contract agreement, 500K or something. So it's, ah it was, that's disappointing.
00:11:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:11:54
Jack Kelly
And another example of another player jumping ship at the first time of asking, really.
00:11:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
I feel like if I'm remembering back to that season, it always sort of felt like he was trying to engineer something though. Um, yeah.
00:12:05
Jack Kelly
a move. Yes, I seem to remember he was never really interested in signing a new contract. I actually was lucky enough to work at Fulham for two weeks in work experience. And during that time, Ross McCormack had signed a new contract while I was there.
00:12:19
Jack Kelly
And we did an interview of him and it was very, very exciting at the time. And there was all this talk about, okay, we're now McCormack signed, let's get their ballet tied down.
00:12:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hmm.
00:12:27
Jack Kelly
But it felt as if he was always reluctant and thought he could go and do bigger and better things. And I think Celtic was a good move for him. He won titles, he scored lots of goals. You know, I'll firm, you know, that's always going to be a very, very big step up for him.
00:12:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:12:40
Jack Kelly
But yeah, disappointing that, again, you know, you show you show a lot of loyalty to the player, but it's not reciprocated by the player back to the club, which is a massive shame.

Career Paths of Dembele and Roberts

00:12:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
And there is one final, before we go to a little break, there is one final player that I think we have to talk about because I think, yeah, we'll come on to him next. The other one um is Patrick Roberts, who was always sort of, I don't know, Fulham's wonder kid that never happened.
00:13:02
Jack Kelly
Mm.
00:13:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think he's probably almost the biggest what-if that we have maybe, just because he never really got any game time anywhere he went after he left Fulham. Like, I think he had more loan spells than appearances for City after they bought him.
00:13:21
Jack Kelly
the Pat Roberts one's really strange because when he broke through, I think when he actually was getting attention was during that 13-14 FA youth cup final against Chelsea, the bar me two legs where we bottled some like four goal lead and lost and the title or the trophy to
00:13:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
but Yeah.
00:13:41
Jack Kelly
to Chelsea at the bridge and he was brilliant that night and so was Musa de Bein and that's when you were looking at those those players and going wow we actually have a very very strong team and then basically what happened was during the the 15-14-15 season in the championship we saw little sparks of Roberts in the first team under what would have been Kit s Simons and Felix MacGuff but more Kit Simons and the the kid was like honestly the ball would would be glued to his feet he was like an incredible dribbler
00:13:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:14:10
Jack Kelly
And then basically what happened was Man City came in, I think it was like 10 million at the time.
00:14:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hmm, it's a lot.
00:14:15
Jack Kelly
And obviously when City come calling, even back in 2014, that's like, you know, one of the biggest clubs in the Premier League.
00:14:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's 12, I think.
00:14:22
Jack Kelly
And I really can't even remember him getting much game time at Man City at all.
00:14:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hmm.
00:14:27
Jack Kelly
He went to Troy in Ligue de.
00:14:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, and Girona as well, I think.
00:14:33
Jack Kelly
Gironia in Spain, obviously now,
00:14:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. Cystic ones, right?
00:14:38
Jack Kelly
Yeah, oh, know that's right as well, yeah. what How old is he now? He must be in his like 24, 25.
00:14:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
he's playing oh I think he might be older than that, i think he's but he's playing as Sunderland now and he's playing pretty well.
00:14:47
Jack Kelly
Oh, yeah, exactly. so So suddenly we finally are seeing the fruits of what Patrick Roberts was going to be when he was 16, 17-year-old coming through.
00:14:58
Jack Kelly
But in so at Sunderland, he plays his role magnificently, ah cutting in, shooting, he's 20,
00:15:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
27. 7.
00:15:06
Jack Kelly
My goodness, that makes me feel really old. I mean, but that's like the peak of your career. And if, if Patrick Roberts is known for a very high-end championship player, who let's admit Sunderland right now are really pushing for, a they're probably gonna, I reckon they'll finish in the top six this season.
00:15:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:15:23
Jack Kelly
If Sunderland find themselves in the Premier League next season, I think Pat Roberts, who very much is like a a Jack Clark sort of player, who obviously wasn't Sunderland and now went to Ipswich, that just wouldn't surprise me if in the peak years of his career, we're seeing Pat Roberts as a Premier League player, because if you strip it all backwards and go back to where he started, that initially was what we thought he was going to be anyway.
00:15:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:15:46
Jack Kelly
It's just obviously, you know, moving too early in your career, not really knowing where you're gonna go. Did he have an attitude problem? I don't really know the ins and outs of it. All I do know is that I'm actually very pleased to see him performing at this sort of level at his age now.
00:15:59
Jack Kelly
And i yeah, I think he's ah potentially gonna be a Premier League player next season.
00:16:03
Global Sports Podcast Network

So I think it's probably only apt to talk about him because we're probably going to face him at the weekend. We've already talked about this about this already, or on Monday Night Football even.
00:16:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
Fabio Carvalho, who I think in that promotion season was one of my favorite players that we went up with. And it only felt right, just the the fact that he was so great under all the contract sort of dispute, was still putting out tens on the pitch, was still playing you know so well and still had this great rapport with the fans. Something that until recently he probably even still had, you know even when he's at Liverpool.
00:17:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
Um, so what, what happened with Fabio? Like, why, why is he not a Fulham boy? why Was it Pereira coming? Like, what, what, what was, what was happening?
00:17:18
Jack Kelly
No, the Fabio Carvalho situation is, again, another strange one. For context, he he he breaks through into the team once we're already relegated, basically.

Fabio Carvalho's Transfer Saga

00:17:31
Jack Kelly
We're relegated under Parker. We go to Southampton. I think we lose 2-1 or 3-1, actually. Carvalho plays and scores. And we're thinking, right, we might be relegated, but we've got a wonder kid for next season, you know no matter what happens. Obviously, Parker goes to Bournemouth. We bring him to Silver.
00:17:48
Jack Kelly
And silver then is like brilliant. We've got Mitrovich, who I can bring back in. We've got Fabio, who can play as the 10. We've got Jomie Kelseri. God, I always forget that midfield now. It's so talented. um ah Anyway, we've got a a whole host of really good players.
00:18:04
Jack Kelly
um Josh Odomar, a bit being one of them, another midfielder who now obviously is at Blackpool, so a bit of a full for place for Josh.
00:18:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hmm. Hmm.
00:18:10
Jack Kelly
But um just to go back to Fabio, you know, in that 21-22 season, arguably my favorite season supporting Fulham, just because we won the championship, it was that good. I know the Premier League has been very fun, but that that was an incredible season, going to basically every game and and seeing us absolutely tramps almost everyone apart from Coventry losing 4-1 on an early kickoff from one goal up.
00:18:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
yep great
00:18:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
It was always Coventry, it was always Coventry.
00:18:33
Jack Kelly
awful. ah But in that season, you know he scored 11 goals, assisted eight times. But what happened was in January, um Liverpool were like, we're going to go for him on deadline day. And it collapsed at the last moment, i.e. he would have gone and we got ah we would have got maybe some small fee for it. And they basically went, OK, we'll go back in from in the summer. ah Basically, once that had happened,
00:18:58
Jack Kelly
Cabello's head was already turned, even though he he played for the second half of the season, he basically knew a ah move to Liverpool, Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool, was on the on the horizon.
00:19:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:19:08
Jack Kelly
um And then I think we got, I can't remember now, five, six, seven million out of it. Again, a tribunal, it might have been a tribunal. I mean, the whole thing is a bit messy.
00:19:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, we're not great, we're not gonna pull that.
00:19:18
Jack Kelly
He wouldn't sign a new contract. He had people around him who were advising him, oh, you know, Liverpool, big money, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. I mean, it happens. And since then...
00:19:29
Jack Kelly
hasn't really worked, has it? I mean, he's played 21 times, Liverpool scored three goals. Yes, he scored a very big goal to win the game against Newcastle in the last minute of the game, loaned out to Leipzig 15 appearances, no goals, no assists went to whole last season actually did very well, 20 games, nine goals, two assists. And then he's like, Oh, okay, Liverpool, like, Oh, we're gonna sell you permanently. and He's assessing his options. And he ends up as a Fulham Academy kid, or you know, signed from Ballon, whatever, goes to
00:20:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
for instance
00:20:00
Jack Kelly
Brentford, I mean, come on, mate. Are you just trying to wind us up? Because he must know about the rivalry between the two teams. I mean, maybe it was the only option, maybe it was the only club that was willing to pay the money that Liverpool wanted.
00:20:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hmm. Hmm.
00:20:13
Jack Kelly
And, you know, he's played 11 times, scored two goals and has three assists. Hasn't played many times in the Premier League. Nine appearances in the Premier League. I think most of them have been off the bench too in the EFL Cup.
00:20:25
Jack Kelly
We will probably see him at some point on Monday. I just think for the quality of player that he was. And he, I think he would have thrived in the Premier League under Marco Silva. Obviously we brought in Andreas and that was fine.
00:20:38
Jack Kelly
But Andreas was the replacement for Carvalho. I reckon Carvalho would have probably started in the 10 and would have been good enough in the 10, at least for the first season. But um it's just a massive shame. And he's now shown himself to be ah got another guy chasing the green, chasing the money, and not really showing any loyalty took towards the club, even though he was so well-liked.
00:20:57
Jack Kelly
He was going to play Premier League minutes for Fulham, when and realistically, he was not going to be playing Premier League minutes for Liverpool.
00:21:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
Oh, 100 percent.
00:21:03
Jack Kelly
Ended up getting loaned out twice. I don't know.
00:21:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
I've never understood this whole thing. I mean, I get what it's like to go and play for a big club. Like, I'm sure it sounds really like seems really fun and cool and shiny and whatever. and But it's like if you look at the team that you're going into look the starting 11 that would probably start week in week out, do you honestly think as a 17 year old wonder kid,
00:21:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
that you're the one that's going to break the mold. You're going to be starring every week. ki You're going to be that guy. I mean, I don't understand how these kids can let themselves get talked into these situations by whoever is looking after them and believe that what they're saying is going to come true.
00:21:43
Jack Kelly
but it's It's because they're surrounded by yes men. Oh yeah, you know, yeah that will happen. There's no, you have to be exceptional. You have to be like a ah Jude Bellingham or a Kobe Menu to be i at you at the age of like 18 to 20 playing in a first team.
00:21:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hmm.
00:21:59
Jack Kelly
I know Bellingham is out of this world. He's gone from, you know, Birmingham to Dortmund to Real Madrid and has won the Champions League and became third in the Ballon d'Or.
00:22:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:22:06
Jack Kelly
I mean, that's incredible. Coby May knew obviously United needed to plug a gap in midfield and it just so happened he was an exceptional talent as well and went to the Euros, et cetera. But like a lot of youngsters who get big moves, they either, they're either like, they sign a five-year deal at Chelsea, six-year deal at Chelsea. Oh, we're going to loan you out for a year. So we're going to have to wait a year for you to even have a chance of coming into the first team. I mean, these players have exception, like they are exceptional talented players, but
00:22:38
Jack Kelly
there are also surrounded by world-class players who are playing in Champions League, Premier League, you're just not gonna fit in. Unless you're winning 4-0 in a game or 3-0 in a game and you get 20 minutes here and there, I don't think that's worth it. Whereas, stay where you are, which by the way, Carvalho was at a Premier League club,
00:22:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
Exactly.
00:22:58
Jack Kelly
and he would have played he would have played 30 plus games in the season for sure because silver liked him he fitted the system he linked up with Mitrovich which at the time would have just worked even better you know Harry Wilson on one side Cabana was still at the club as well um yeah it's just a shame it's a shame i don't really i don't really care about it anymore but obviously he's going to be back at the at the cottage on um
00:23:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:23:20
Jack Kelly
on monday night so obviously that's going to bring back a lot of feelings from the fans and um for him personally i just bet he scores i bet he scores and i bet he celebrates and in front of the brentford end i reckon he would he's got that sort of like trying to wind up the the fan sort of mentality he did it at full of me you know shushing the barnsley fans when he scored against barnsley um earlier in the season and i don't know if i'm just
00:23:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. that He celebrates. No way.
00:23:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
Ooh. Well, that'd be interesting. but i do i'm um I'm very interested to see the sort of reception he gets. Oh, I'd probably clap him, to be honest, because I really respect what he did for us that one season.
00:23:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
I don't know, the the the more I hear about this now, especially from you here, oh God, it it doesn't seems all a bit sour actually.
00:24:01
Jack Kelly
I think it is a sour thing. ah He had a platform to build on. He could have signed a two-year deal, a three-year deal at Fulham, and been a solid Premier League player at his age. And he's sort of gone about it the wrong way. He's gone to a big club, he's had to have two loan spells, and now he's ended up at, arguably, in my opinion, a smaller club in Brentford.
00:24:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
Or accurate.
00:24:24
Jack Kelly
Yeah, and a team that, yeah, they might finish above us this season and and he might play a lot of Premier League minutes, but he's basically delayed his his whole sort of um process and and career by two, three years for the sake of, what, a few Champions League appearances here and there?
00:24:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah,
00:24:41
Jack Kelly
I don't get it, I don't get it.
00:24:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
two years to leave Fulham and then two years later end up at Brentford. Surely you're looking at yourself like, what have I done here? That's so silly.
00:24:49
Jack Kelly
A bit of QPR in like two years.
00:24:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
So do you think that just dotting around West London?
00:24:55
Jack Kelly
League one.
00:24:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
And then, okay, we've got a player like Jay Stansfield, who I was probably is the most excited I felt about an Academy prospect in terms of like seeing the hype, watching him come up, seeing his loan spells go successfully like all the time, like every loan spell he went on he was cracker.

Jay Stansfield and Financial Impacts

00:25:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
And now we've got him leaving for, i know I mean, look, it's a ridiculous fee for someone that young to a club like that. I mean, it's a crazy fee. So you sort of have to say yes. But do you not think it's the sort of player that's going to be worth double that in four years, five years, playing consistent minutes?
00:25:34
Jack Kelly
yeah I think the fee with it rising to 20 is for a League One team and for an academy player. I know he came through Exeter's Academy and then we poached him from Exeter, so we might not get the full profit from him like you would any other Academy player you get all the profits from from that um from that deal.
00:25:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:25:56
Jack Kelly
I think that was with the turning point. I think he probably wanted to go because he was there last season. and He had such a good feeling from the fan base, even though they went they they went down. And look, we're playing Birmingham tonight, the under 21's are.
00:26:08
Jack Kelly
So he'll probably be playing against Fulham, under 21's, he'll probably be playing against the team he has been, or teammates he's been playing with for the last two, three years. So definitely worth watching. I was really excited about Jay, like you, I felt it was like a new signing because it was another option off the bench and he was on the bench against United and I really thought, actually, you know what?
00:26:29
Jack Kelly
He can have some sort of impact this season, but
00:26:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:26:32
Jack Kelly
20 million, 15 to 20 million pounds. It's just like utterly ridiculous. And that will help the club. but I mean, that's, that's as good as ah and an average Premier League player sort of fee. And this is a player who hasn't quite proved it yet.
00:26:46
Jack Kelly
Do I think he'll be worth double that in three, four years? It depends on where Birmingham are at. You know, I think they'll probably go back to the championship.
00:26:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
it's Yeah, exactly. It's difficult.
00:26:53
Jack Kelly
And I think he is a solid championship striker. Do I think he's a Premier League striker? I mean, yeah, he could be, he could be, but it just depends on that trajectory that Birmingham take over the next few years.
00:27:05
Jack Kelly
I think we've got the better deal at the moment.
00:27:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:27:08
Jack Kelly
And look, if he if he moves on and Birmingham get 45 million for him and he goes to like a a West Ham or something like that, we're gonna get 10%, 20% of that deal.
00:27:18
Jack Kelly
I think it's 20%, actually, we've got a sell on.
00:27:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
Oh, that's okay. All right.
00:27:22
Jack Kelly
So actually we're gonna make some money from that as well. so No ill feeling to Jay at all.
00:27:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
No, no, no, no, no.
00:27:26
Jack Kelly
Go and chase the dream and you'll actually be helping us out not only now, but also in the future.
00:27:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
the way but ah Yeah.
00:27:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hmm.

Upcoming Academy Talents

00:27:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
So then if we're looking to the future now, who are the next sort of guys that we can really get properly excited about? We've got, we've got Josh King, obviously we've talked about him on the pub before. He's amazing. And then we've got did Dibley Diaz probably is, is our other what properly like wonder kid level almost.
00:27:50
Jack Kelly
I think WDS hasn't quite hit the heights at Northampton so far this season.
00:27:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yep.
00:27:56
Jack Kelly
um i think It's difficult because you know, he hasn't got many minutes and and you suddenly sunday you put a player in and an under 21 team and you pluck them out and put them into a men's team in league one.
00:27:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
He hasn't got many minutes though, has he?
00:28:06
Jack Kelly
It's quite difficult to sort of judge if they're going to they're going to shine. And especially if you're not going to get many minutes yourself, it is quite difficult. um I think that looking at the academy, so like players who will be playing tonight, Callum Osmond for sure, John Asenga, Luke Dafougaros, I think Luke Dafougaros might still be injured, but There are some good players, Chris Donnell in midfield, Sakuriak as the number 10.
00:28:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:28:31
Jack Kelly
And these are players who are in the academy.
00:28:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
He came in a while ago, Sekirok.
00:28:35
Jack Kelly
Yeah, no, he's been here for a while.
00:28:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
What is the story with, with Sekirok now? Cause he was Swiss international. He got from Juventus, was it?
00:28:40
Jack Kelly
I think that might be right actually, yeah.
00:28:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:28:42
Jack Kelly
So he's a number 10, predominantly like could fit into a Marco Silva system.
00:28:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:28:47
Jack Kelly
um Scores a lot, assists a lot, loves to bomb forward and very, very good on the ball, very strong runner. um I think there's a lot to be excited about the Academy right now.
00:28:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hmm.
00:28:57
Jack Kelly
Obviously Josh is the star. Osman reminds me a lot of Jay Stanfield in the way he presses, that his speed is finishing. um So i'm I'm actually very excited about the potential.
00:29:08
Jack Kelly
i I'd like to see more of WBLIAS this season. Also Arrujo, who's at Chesterfield, is doing really well.
00:29:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hmm.
00:29:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah harvey is alvier
00:29:16
Jack Kelly
Tantum as well, doing really well at Chesterfield, getting rave reviews and Ollie Sanderson scoring goals for Bradford as well after scoring goals at Sutton last season. I'm very excited about the academy ah right now.
00:29:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
like And before we come on to our last little bit, let me just tell you a bit about the GSPN. 00:29:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
so You know, I'm sure you know about the Johnny Haynes trophy from the Full of Sporters Trust, which gets given to the best academy prospectors.
00:29:59
Jack Kelly
Oh, yeah, yeah.
00:30:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think it started what started in 2019, I think, with Tyrese Francois, who's obviously now just gone to Wigan.
00:30:04
Jack Kelly
Right.
00:30:06
Jack Kelly
Yeah.
00:30:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
That was a player that I was very confused about. I always sort of heard about him, but never saw him play once.
00:30:14
Jack Kelly
Francois was a frustrating when he actually started in silver's first ever game for film under against against Middlesbrough, but he had like a couple of rogue um loan deals in like Croatia and then and then he I just think he just he never really got a chance to sort of fit into the first team and ended up going to Wigan actually played last night for Wigan actually um against Blackpool and Yeah, a player who might go to do bigger and better things, but was just never really going to make it to foot him, unfortunately.
00:30:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hmm.
00:30:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. And then, I mean, the next two that won him after him, we know very well. Jay won it in 2020 and obviously has gone on to do, you know, well, got us some money like at least.
00:30:50
Jack Kelly
Mm hmm.
00:30:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
Fabio Cavalli then won it the year after him. And then Sonny Hilton, who another is another player I heard a lot about, but I'm not actually sure how he's doing now.
00:30:58
Jack Kelly
Mm hmm.
00:31:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
I mean, he's sort of gone under the radar again.
00:31:05
Jack Kelly
sunny hilton it's a bit of a sad story with with sunny he um He was in the academy and then he got a loan move to the football league um two seasons ago in 22-23 for Carlisle.
00:31:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hmm.
00:31:22
Jack Kelly
At the time, Carlisle were playing in league two and they got promoted. And then he played about 10 fixtures, 10 games, seven of which were in league two, no goals, no assists. And according to Thought Mob, he's now a free agent.
00:31:36
Jack Kelly
So I don't know whether he got released.
00:31:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
I thought he was still...
00:31:38
Jack Kelly
I also heard he was playing for a non-league team.
00:31:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
Oh dear, it's happened that quickly.
00:31:44
Jack Kelly
Yeah, but it was like a because at the time it was like the Academy was all about Luke Harris and Sonny Hilton. They were the the two but who played in the attacking midfield roles and they were the most exciting players. And Luke Harris is having a lot about Birmingham where I'm not seeing him get a ton of minutes for Birmingham right now.
00:32:03
Jack Kelly
and Hilton's completely fallen off an edge of the cliff really. So and it's very unlucky how these, and these are examples of players falling through the cracks in academies where they have a loan move or they get a bad injury and suddenly their career is delayed by you know six months to a year and suddenly they get forgotten about and then everyone's moved on to the next Academy product. So Hilton was sad was a sad one. and It's a shame that he on paper right now doesn't seem to have a club.
00:32:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
And then our most recent winner of it is probably that what our next our next member of full America, I guess, Devon Devon Tanton from San Antonio. He looks really exciting, though.
00:32:42
Jack Kelly
Mmm.
00:32:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
um Yeah, but he's a right back. So it looks like we've actually got some cover at right back maybe for once because we need it at the moment.
00:32:51
Jack Kelly
Tantum has ah started really well. I think I believe he's injured right now. um
00:32:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
We send him online to Chesterfield, didn't we?
00:33:00
Jack Kelly
Yes, so him and Eruzio are both at Chesterfield. He hasn't played since the end of September. um I believe he picked up an injury because I think he came up at half time in ah in a game against Doncaster Rovers. um He's only played six times this season but from I remember the opening night when they played Swindon. um I was reading some Chesterfield Twitter forum or some you know some comments on twitter and they were saying tantrums like the real deal um arugio's been the one who's been more impressive he's played more minutes um but tantrum is a right back and obviously we've got tete and castanha and we've got bradley jahazuz and gofford as well in the academy but that's another very good option at right back in tantrum and um i think after this loan spell we may see him push in the first team i i believe that he might be the next one to come through from a defensive standpoint apart from luke dafougre i was
00:33:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:33:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yep, so Dafuagorol's Tanton and then is it between him, Dafuagorol and Josh King for the next probably Academy graduate into the first team?
00:33:58
Jack Kelly
Joshkin's basically already there. So I mean, it's gotta be between, and I suppose Dafugo has made his sort of bow as well in the first team against Ipswich.
00:34:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
so
00:34:09
Jack Kelly
If I had to be pushed for like a name who I think is gonna make an appearance of the first team next, I'll have to say just because he went to preseason, which which means that he is thought of by Marco is John Asenga, who's a left back.
00:34:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
Ah.
00:34:25
Jack Kelly
It's obviously Ante Robinson, Ryan Sesignon. It's obviously not the easiest position to take right now.
00:34:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
Brightens it.
00:34:31
Jack Kelly
And even if we played in the FA Cup, you'd imagine Sesignon would start at left back ahead of Robinson.
00:34:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hmm.
00:34:35
Jack Kelly
ah But Asenga is definitely on the radar. And maybe, maybe, maybe, maybe Tansen will be there as well.
00:34:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hmm.
00:34:47
Jack Kelly
if if he if he continues to impress at Chesterfield, if he recovers from his injury. I think Dafuq rolls has actually had a lot of injury setbacks. It seems like every time Dafuq rolls goes to play for Canada, he comes back with an injury, um which is just unlucky.
00:35:00
Jack Kelly
But that's like incredible that he's getting copper America experience at his age.
00:35:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:35:05
Jack Kelly
I watched him play the other day and he's just so composed. It reminds me of Tim Reem, the way he sort of maraud's fall of the ball strong passer and good tackle of the ball as well but definitely worth getting excited about. Josh King obviously is is the main man and hopefully he plays today but he's been on the bench for the last two games so um in the first team so hopefully we we see him come on against Brentford when we've fallen him up in 60 minutes.
00:35:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
Perfect. Well, there you have it, guys. theres a few more names for you guys to get excited about for the coming years. Hopefully we see some of them this season, but we'll see you tomorrow and from us here at the GSPM Fulham. It's goodbye.
