Introduction to Homeschool vs. Public School
00:00:00
Speaker
Hello, I'm Nolan. And I'm Carly. and and And today we're talking about school. And school topics. Yeah. I personally do homeschool.
00:00:12
Speaker
And I do public school. Yeah. So we do have different experiences, but that's why we're talking about it today. and My personal experience is i didn't have to spend a lot of time away from home because we just did it throughout the day instead of all just seven hour blah.
00:00:36
Speaker
Yeah, and for me, that's where I made my like social experiences very early in life. And it just kind of overlapped.
00:00:49
Speaker
And I haven't had as many social experiences. I mainly do them in other things like going to the park, a do it going to the gym, stuff like that. and Yeah. We both do jiu-jitsu. Jiu-jitsu. Martialettes. Also a sport.
00:01:06
Speaker
Yes. Let's not go off topic. Not off topic. School. Okay. And...
Flexibility and Social Experiences in Education
00:01:11
Speaker
What I think could be better is they do a lot more learning during the thing instead of, like, they keep you seven hours a day away from your home. Yeah. That would make it so much easier for kids to be engaged in the school if they got it all done quickly so they can get home and have their soul and keep their social experiences a lot more home-focused instead of... yeah at school because i just feel like that keeps kids from seeing the actual side of people and then it's just a popularity contest at school.
00:01:42
Speaker
yeah for Yeah, that's pretty much how it is ah during public school because... There's, first of all, there's no uniform. So like everyone isn't really in line or in check and it's just very rowdy with, um, the classes and don't get me started on assemblies. Uh, assemblies, you just sit on the hardwood floor as the principal goes up and talks about, like, gives people certificates of,
Perceptions and Diverse Learning in Homeschool
00:02:17
Speaker
Yeah. When at homeschool, I do a lot of it outside, which I have a lot more tan than all the other kids in my neighborhood because I'm one few homeschools in my neighborhood.
00:02:28
Speaker
But I know a few other kids who are homeschooled.
00:02:32
Speaker
I feel like people think school is superior to homeschool, so... Yeah. I just think that makes it harder for homeschool kids to be social with school kids. Yes. But in my neighborhood, it's a very well-opened community.
00:02:46
Speaker
Unlike some other neighborhoods. Yeah. Like my neighborhood, it's just either a bunch of old people or a bunch of little kids.
00:02:57
Speaker
And those two don't clash together because the kids, in them every single morning they have to go to school. The roads are not that busy because we all leave at different times, but it's still kind of rowdy because there's a lot of stupid kids in my neighborhood.
00:03:16
Speaker
What? Yeah. question the IQ levels of the kids in my neighborhood. Yeah. And I sometimes question my own IQ levels because people think, oh, you're not learning as much in public school. I mean, homeschool.
00:03:33
Speaker
Yeah. And then learn, I learn way more different topics. Yeah. Like outdoor stuff, animal science. I watch Wild Kratts for part of my school yeah because they teach so well. Yes.
00:03:46
Speaker
Like, kids' shows, they just... They... When I was watching a kids' show with some other little kids that my sister was babysitting, we they decided to put on, like, some learning show for kids.
00:04:01
Speaker
And I learned stuff that I never knew before I watched that. And I just feel like I'm older than them, like, way older. And you're both learning at the same time. Yeah. It was like old shows like that are like old time school all the kids shoved into one room learning the exact same topics exactly i think that was a good idea until so many kids are in one area then you can't do that and they baby little kids so much these days it's hard for them to learn the same stuff as us
00:04:34
Speaker
Yes, especially... Shows like Daniel Tiger, I feel like, baby the kids too much. Yeah. Like, they're not really teaching them anything, they're just... They're teaching them, like, emotions and how to control them, and, like, they pretty much have control over them already. Except for when they
Teaching Emotions and Behavioral Programs in Schools
00:04:52
Speaker
go... i remember Yeah.
00:04:55
Speaker
They just... They don't... I can't think of word. they don't mess with older people unless they feel smaller than them.
00:05:10
Speaker
And that doesn't really happen as much until they get babied a lot. And that's when their big anger, anger tantrum comes out and.
00:05:22
Speaker
Yeah. There are only a few small kids in my neighborhood and they're all friends. Some of them are babied a bit too much than others. Some yeah act just like the older kids, just with a lot a little bit less control over their emotions.
00:05:38
Speaker
When some... just say... Yeah. I question their sanity. Yes. For sure. no No specific names. We're not doing any specific names. Yeah.
00:05:51
Speaker
But um in in kindergarten, when my fifth grade class went to... um go look after the kindergarteners, teach them how to use their Chromebooks, teach them how to get, like, PBIS, um, which is, like, this.
00:06:11
Speaker
It's, um... It's a program we used to do to get kids to whenever they get PBIS points, it means they get points every time they act good.
00:06:23
Speaker
And it's just been kind been becoming this overlapping thing at school. And It's like kindergarten, they're just getting used to the school year and they don't understand how the school system works as much. They don't know as many kids and the fifth graders, they want to act older than everyone else because they're the oldest in the school grade.
00:06:53
Speaker
At least if you're in public school and not junior high or something. Yeah. Yeah. when the only school I did was preschool and that's, that's just teaching kids to learn. i feel like they did a pretty good job at what they did, but I had amazing teachers with it.
00:07:14
Speaker
They treated the kids very well and they didn't baby us too much. They did it just enough that we didn't just freak out the whole day, but they, they, they got right down to business. So I didn't spend too much of my day there.
00:07:26
Speaker
Yeah, um I feel like schools either baby you too much to where you don't learn anything at all, or they give you too much work and just so many overlapping paperwork that you have to do.
00:07:43
Speaker
that it just becomes this stressing early days experience. That's why I'm afraid to go back to school. well It's just because don't want my whole
Balancing Coding and Outdoor Activities
00:07:56
Speaker
day to be school. Then I can't do anything else. And a lot of my days spent outside playing. Yeah. I'm trying to learn to code as well. So I haven't quite started on that, but I'm getting quite close in my homeschool stuff that we're going to do some coding classes later. Yeah, i feel like with your personal life, um it's really healthy. You go outside for a decent amount of time. You get a lot of physical activity in with jujitsu or any sport. walking my dog. Walking your dog as well. And you're also learning, like, you're not just, like, no no technology whatsoever. You have to be outside. You have to read a book. Yeah.
00:08:40
Speaker
it's not always like that like you're still learning how to code and know i'm a game i'm also a gamer a heart i gotta get that i'm a big gamer yes but i still make plenty of time to play outside i sometimes just fall asleep outside tanning yeah or just getting some sunshine when i don't have my enough vitamin d like i spend most of the day inside the next few like if i don't if i go a few days without getting enough vitamin d i I'm just this grumpy, shut down mess. Yeah. And I don't want to do anything but just do nothing.
00:09:14
Speaker
But when I get like an hour worth of sunshine on me after that, it's like a whole, it's like my body is solar powered, but it can run without sunshine. Yeah. But it just doesn't really know what to do without that vitamin D boost. And when it first hit me, the sunshine after a few days without enough,
00:09:36
Speaker
It just is this warming feeling. Yes. For sure. um Cause it's just when i I go outside for um like very little during my week because of because my dad owns a business that I have to stay there for like for almost till like as soon as we get home we have to eat and then go to bed and at school like we have lunch but afterwards we get like so very little time of going outside and usually when I during lunch I go to the library instead because there's so many kids that just do stupid things and and you don't want to get associated with that
00:10:29
Speaker
Yeah. When I was in preschool, I gotta admit this, i got in trouble twice, and that was it. i only went to the principal office twice.
Incidents and Challenges in Early School Life
00:10:37
Speaker
I think once, actually. One time was from punching a kid in the face.
00:10:41
Speaker
Oh. But there was a reason. They were throwing rocks through a tiny little house window. we We had pebble area. Yeah. And we had this tiny plastic little house. There was a way smaller kid in there, and they were and they were just throwing rocks. They didn't know anyone was in there. And I stuck my fist out to, like, try to wave my hand and say stop, and he was accidentally in the way. And then he went over and cried to the teacher, and I got in trouble.
00:11:03
Speaker
And I just i felt so bad that day because I was bigger than the kid, but I didn't mean to. And I actually was bullied once. Back then, was just to push down the slide.
00:11:15
Speaker
I landed on my face in the rocks. Because we had these tiny little round pebbles that get in your shoes everywhere. yeah. I would play tag a lot as well. And you know when your legs just shut down and you just faceplant?
00:11:27
Speaker
That was a lot of time because you're running around and your feet just sink in so much. It's so energy inefficient. Yep. It's like you have to make a rule that's like, wait, I'm on T. T means break, okay? i'm I'm catching up on my breath or something and it just...
00:11:46
Speaker
Takes up a lot of your day. Yeah. Why don't they just use, like, the wood chips, like, in actual parks? Exactly. Like, we had a lot of wood chips during... We used to have, like, this playground that had...
00:12:02
Speaker
We do have a playground, the third grade playground, with a bunch of rocks with the pebbles. Like the tiny little ones yeah that like get everywhere and sometimes if you face plant up your nose. Yes. We had another playground that had an actual like patio, with this rubber patio that was pretty soft yet kind of get really sturdy.
00:12:24
Speaker
And then we had the other playground that had the wooden bark. And we had this other Swin set that was like separate and it also had the bark, but that's- Was he like that rubbery bark?
00:12:39
Speaker
Um- Is it like that stuff made of rubber? Oh, it's the actual wood? Yeah. Ow, that stuff hurts when you fall down. Yeah. That's just the worst to play tagging because when you try to drift to catch someone, you're like a cheetah.
00:12:52
Speaker
You flip over and just- It hurts your bum. Yes. Yes. But the fifth graders, when the Swin set was taken away, it was too late to tell them that. Because they decided that area was going to be a place called Sharks and Minnows.
00:13:08
Speaker
Yay. We play that sometimes in my neighborhood. But it's not with so many people. it's and it's a smaller area. Yes. I went to this church camp.
00:13:21
Speaker
Chaos. Because there was over 100 kids there probably. Yeah. And they had this one song where there was this part, shout out, the person said, but let's just say the kids said it too and at full volume.
00:13:35
Speaker
And I have very sensitive hearing. So i plugged my ears and curled into my lap. Yeah. And I ended up crying ah after that song because it my ears just hurt so much.
00:13:47
Speaker
That's the problem with school. There's too many kids. And out of those kids, there's a few big bullies. and Yeah. if ah In large groups of kids, there's bullies. I was bullied a bit. Yeah. Because what even if you try to keep do activities that try to prevent bullying, bullies just find ways to do it.
00:14:05
Speaker
Yeah, I'm for sure gonna, like, um, one of my, this is, like, a possible career dream for me one day to be a fifth grade teacher because I didn't have a good fifth grade experience, but... i want to do that for other kids? Yeah, for, as a, as a fifth grade teacher, I want to...
00:14:25
Speaker
Like, instead of just sending them out to the hall right away, i want to have, like, this, um, I want to warn them once, warn them twice, and then then we'll have then have long discussion. Yeah, a long discussion with the teacher and the student itself, because not just everything right away with, hey, your so your child isn't cooperating in class daily, because maybe they don't have a good family experience. Maybe they express...
00:14:55
Speaker
Maybe they have a slight mental disorder yeah they're just a very violent person. um I feel like school is a very tense environment for kids because it's very hard for kids to be good socially when they're grumpy and not wanting to do this much work.
00:15:16
Speaker
Yeah. it'd be I feel like the pandemic... the like, online classes was kind of a good idea. Yeah. Except everyone wasn't able to be social during that time, so they just associated the online classes with no social.
00:15:32
Speaker
Yeah. The only social was, like, sometimes neighborhood kids would get together, but it'd be nice if school was a bit less
00:15:44
Speaker
dedication but you're still dedicated to it but not like all your life as yes school age you're just doing work if they could just shorten the days or put in bit more work in the in shorten the time that would be the perfect thing by the way i'm 12 and yeah and yeah That's just, I'm all i'm homeschooled at 12, and I feel like that's a great experience to have. Homeschooling is basically what they kind of need to do with kids. Yeah, because I want my future children to um have the childhood experience of... having a bunch of friends and even if someone makes fun of you or pushes you all you need is an apology and you're back to besties or something like that's the childhood experience I want my children to have so I'm going to send them to elementary school public school and then I'm going to bring them back to home school for middle school because middle school is tough
00:16:48
Speaker
All my friends who were in middle school said it was a pretty good environment, except for if they were rude kids. Because middle school, there's so many different ages, sizes.
00:16:58
Speaker
yeah Yes. Teachers are like, brr, it's not a problem. mer Yeah. don't know why meant brr. I just, i I am a very expressive person. Yeah. um But, so, the difference between my middle school and
Middle School Social Dynamics and Challenges
00:17:15
Speaker
other middle schools...
00:17:16
Speaker
I went to my specific middle school because ah because it was closest to my dad's business. But what I really wanted to go to was this other middle school. was It was in my range of having to go there, and I didn't get to go there.
00:17:39
Speaker
even all All the popular kids at my school are at my middle school right now, and all my friends are at the other school. So that's not a very good situation for me because I've been having such a tough time trying to find my crowd.
00:17:57
Speaker
Yeah, I feel like if they just made it a bit less tense on the kids, it'd be easier for them to make, ruy like, not like relationship, like,
00:18:11
Speaker
girlfriend or boyfriend, but like, yeah good social bonds that are very hard to get in, like, in later grades because it's so tense. you youre You know what's going on with your school. Everything's a popularity contest and, like, you don't know people as well.
00:18:29
Speaker
Because they hide anything that isn't perfect about themselves. Yes. Which makes it hard to make any best friends that weren't you didn't already have. Exactly. Because I want a best friend that thinks of me as their best friend.
00:18:45
Speaker
And um I want a friend that makes me die laughing by making these stupid jokes that i am that only we understand and no one else. That's the kind.
00:18:58
Speaker
i i make the stupidest jokes. And I think that comes from homeschool, but probably not specifically. Yeah. It just lets me be more expressive with myself.
00:19:11
Speaker
Exactly. Like, um, I'm turning 13 soon. um and a lot of, it means that I'm going to be a teenager and not anymore in my childhood.
00:19:26
Speaker
And, It just kind of sucks because, um... like a slap. It's like a cold slap in the face. Yes. It's like a good and bad relationship with growing up. It's like you can do these certain things, but you can't do these certain things anymore. It's like there's restrictions and there's requirements according to society. and There's just so much pressure put on kids growing up, especially I'm starting hit puberty.
00:19:58
Speaker
And I'm a bit more emotional right now. Yes.
Emotional Expression and Growing Up Pressures
00:20:02
Speaker
Which makes it very, which I'm glad I'm in homeschool because sometimes have breakdowns.
00:20:09
Speaker
And it lets me just go into a room, calm down. Exactly. I'm i'm getting... The tears are starting to try to come out right now because I don't usually talk about this kind of thing. Yeah. i I just get this... I just bottle my emotions up and then they just come up at random times that some stuff just triggers me. Exactly. Like specific insults.
00:20:31
Speaker
Yeah. And then it just comes out in a flood. I pretend it's like a crock pot. I put it down, the pressure builds up, I push down harder. Until it explodes and boils over and i just I can't stop it mid-thing.
00:20:49
Speaker
Yeah. It's... back to topic. Yeah, because, um... when you get into a certain grade and, like, you see all these happy kids that are being mean, it just... it... it doesn't make it a great expression to cry in public because that's according to society rules and that's not a good impression to put on.
00:21:18
Speaker
Even though in like every single movie or show, the main character always has this trauma that's inside of them that they're trying to bury down inside. But then at some point- It boils over- Yeah. Drama, drama, drama. Drama. And that that's what's the thing I'm worried about. Shows are putting too much impression on kids affecting their real life.
00:21:41
Speaker
Yes. And I feel like I'm not against shows. I i i like my TV time. Yes. But it's just I feel like kids take so much so too seriously when they're growing up, especially almost getting to our age where they're about to hit puberty. They're afraid, oh, everyone's going to hate me. I'm going to look ugly. Oh, no, I'm going to be dumb. Oh, I'm going to be a jerk.
00:22:07
Speaker
And then that actually happens to them because they think it's going to happen. Yes, exactly. Because it always, the best things always happen when you least expect it Because when I was, i was present, I was going to present like this DIY project I had.
00:22:28
Speaker
Like, it was a project for my class, and for extra credit, we had to read to the class. And I wanted that extra credit because my grade wasn't doing so well. Um, and so I went up there, and the the illustrations weren't fully covered. The book was much longer than the other kids' books, and it just, it wasn't like the others and so i was shaking the whole time as i was reading it and once i got off the chair everyone started applaud applause louder than anyone else's book and i just felt really special in that moment so many compliments were given to me after that and it's because it school is a hard place to make friends and
00:23:22
Speaker
just it kind of overflows when you try to explain one of your interests but then it turns out becoming bad thing to express and yeah it makes people scared to present their real selves i know i said something like that earlier yeah it's just i've That's one of the things I'm afraid if I do go back to regular school, I won't be able to make any friends. And then I'll do something. I'll screw up something and then everyone will laugh at me.
00:24:00
Speaker
And it's just. It's tough. Yeah. There's just too much pressure put on
Life Path Expectations and Authenticity
00:24:07
Speaker
kids. here They're in an emotional time. These kinds of things affect their later life a lot.
00:24:13
Speaker
And so putting all this on them is basically. That's the thing. Kids, once they reach the age of five, go to preschool, then they're in school, then they have to get a job, then they just, then when you're old, you're too old to do stuff. No offense to all people.
00:24:32
Speaker
Yeah. Because I know few old people who are very strong and very... ugly Even though they live longer than a lot of people, like Ivan Oma,
00:24:43
Speaker
who is over, is going to turn 101. And she lives in Canada in the middle of nowhere. She found she literallyly literally put up a fence of ah like 100,000 acres and built a little house and just is live lived there. She had a farm, but she she can't really own the farm she can't really keep up with the farm, so she sold some of her land and given it to a other people ah ah in her family.
00:25:11
Speaker
And other people live on her lot on her land. like Yeah. Like, relatives. he's She's on my dad's side, who's a tougher side. And yeah how did we get to this topic?
00:25:23
Speaker
um Growing up. Yeah. Yeah. And I just think it would be a lot better...
00:25:35
Speaker
for kids if there's a lot less pressure put on them at this age to let them experience being a kid for a little bit longer. Exactly, because growing up, I used to have this existential crisis time during my life where I saw like um I was in, like, this really long line with, like, surrounded by people I didn't know with my family, and my family was kind of busy talking about something else, so I was just trapped in my thoughts, and I... yeah We were at, like...
00:26:14
Speaker
the other side of the store in the long line. And then we got to like one of the, we got really close to the front of the line with a bunch of people behind us.
00:26:27
Speaker
And I kind of just let that sink in like, Hey, I'm, I'm long before that boring part. It's nothing's going to last forever.
00:26:41
Speaker
And it kind of just trapped me in this existential crisis of like... Cold slap in the face. Yeah. Reality's tough sometimes. Especially youre when you realize stuff that was playing right in front of you, but you didn't realize it till now.
00:26:54
Speaker
And then just, it's like a weight. Yes. It's like you're trying to lift the whole world on your shoulders. Yeah. And then you get crushed. And it's great to have good relationships because... They help you lift that weight, and it's just really good.
00:27:09
Speaker
Yeah. Currently, I'm trying, right now, I'm trying to express my humor and wear clothes that I think are fashionable and and don't care what anybody else You're trying to be yourself? Yes. That's, I don't really care what other people think a lot of the times.
00:27:28
Speaker
I care, but i'm not I'm not putting at the top of my list what do they think. I put what do I think about stuff. Exactly. i think homeschool helps me with that a lot. So it's good to put some people in homeschool, but some people really need regular school. They just need to make regular school easier on kids so kids can be in regular school.
00:27:49
Speaker
Because not all parents can do homeschool. My mom is the one teaching me, and She's really good at it, but i don't know if other people can have parents that can actually do that. Yeah, because a lot of adults have to work because, um like, they work, but then they also have a family, and so they have to they have the stress on trying to make time for both. For kids, they have the stress of schoolwork and friend drama and a bunch of other things. I'm not saying that adults don't have much to deal with because we all have equal stress in our lives.
00:28:26
Speaker
We just have something that matters more in our life and another thing that comes along that... It just makes us stressed out. And I feel like as a child, it's really tough and that some adults don't understand that as well.
00:28:44
Speaker
Yeah, i'm I'm glad my parents had a similar life to me, except they they went to regular school. But actually, back to my Oma, she was alive in World War II.
00:28:58
Speaker
Really? right by Right by the end of it. And she was like three or four. Yeah. She lived in the area that, what was it?
00:29:13
Speaker
can't remember what the area was called, but she moved to Canada. Yeah. But that was when she when she' was 20. shelet She lived in Germany. and she was in one of the areas that had the battle.
00:29:27
Speaker
Her house, o I think, I don't know what happened to her house beth there, but... Her family moved to America, I think, and then when she was 20, she founded the farm area.
00:29:38
Speaker
Yeah? Yeah. Rid on on a horse and made the fence, and they owned the land. Dang. Yeah. We're gonna cut this video... We're gonna end this video... Not this video, this podcast.
00:29:52
Speaker
This particular recording soon. So, um, let's just do some finishing words. Yeah. School... In conclusion, school is tough because teachers don't understand kids as well and kids don't understand teachers as well.
00:30:13
Speaker
Life... Kids have it easy to some people and to the kids they have it hard because they haven't experienced hard things. But when they've experienced hard things, they feel like they have to keep doing that.
00:30:26
Speaker
Yeah. I feel like... that if they just made school bit easier, it would be easier for kids to make friends, and those friends would help them through life. And that's my conclusion. Yeah.
00:30:37
Speaker
Piece of advice... Be yourself. If people start... If some random kids start making fun of you, even if they're older... Ignore Yeah, ignore them. And even so, just look at them weird like they're doing something wrong because they are doing something wrong.
00:30:55
Speaker
Because you have your own interests and just because they don't like that doesn't mean that they can just go up to you and make fun of that. Yeah. So, yeah. Be yourself and...
00:31:07
Speaker
Not all our videos are going to be this deep. Yeah. all their Some of our other things are going to be Minecraft. Yes. We're going to doing things, gaming and history, like gaming between history. That's what we're going to do here.
00:31:20
Speaker
Yeah. And that's all I got to say. Yeah. Um, bye. Well, we'll see you guys next podcast.
