What does it feel like to know something is profoundly wrong but have no language for the pain, to spend decades being told to just try harder when the very act of trying pushes you further into isolation? Some of us carry defenses formed so early in childhood that we mistake them for who we are, and those protective patterns become the walls that keep out everything we think we want.

The belief that the right job or relationship will finally fix us falls apart when the condition itself blocks our ability to get close enough to anyone or anything that might help. Some wounds stay invisible until they are why we cannot keep a job, cannot leave home, or cannot care for our own needs, and recognition is what turns decades of confusion into something we can finally work with.

Blair Sorrel is an author, innovator, and animal lover. She was Free Time’s “Dollarwise Dilettante” columnist, Together Dating Service’s matchmaker, and New York Blood Services’ apheresis recruiter. She founded StreetZaps to protect dogs and people from stray voltage, and was the first community representative invited by Con Edison to their annual Jodie S. Lane Stray Voltage Detection, Mitigation, and Prevention National Conference. Her memoir is A Schizoid at Smith: How Overparenting Leads to Underachieving.

We spend so much energy searching for the person or program or practice that will finally show us who we are, but what happens when the very thing promising transformation becomes the thing that pulls us furthest from ourselves? The path back from that edge can look nothing like we expect, and sometimes it starts with a commitment we make to ourselves about where we will show up and what we refuse to bring there.

We forget that our bodies hold intelligence our minds have lost access to, that presence is not a gift but a muscle we have to rebuild after spending too long trapped in our own thoughts. The way back to ourselves often requires us to slow down enough to notice what has been right in front of us the entire time, and sometimes that simple act of paying attention becomes the thing that saves us.

PEERS is an evidence-based social skills treatment for adolescents and young adults with ASD, ADHD, anxiety, depression, and other socio-emotional problems. She has worked in crisis intervention for families of children with developmental disabilities and 20+ years as an executive sales director for a benefits consulting firm.

Jamie is committed to offering her experiences as a Certified Social Worker, PEERS provider, and mother to help support neurodivergent young adults achieve their social, vocational, and independent living goals.

She lives in New York City with her husband, Jason, two children, Jesse and Cameron, and her French bulldog, Ferguson.

BRITTANY MOSER

Brittany Moser is the Director of Learning Design in the Higher Education space and a respected Autism Specialist who brings Australian-born perspectives to her work in the United States. With a Master’s degree in Autism Studies and extensive experience in NYC schools, she has dedicated her career to developing innovative tools and resources that enhance the lives of the autism community.

In her current role, Brittany leads learning design initiatives in higher education while maintaining active corporate consulting focused on improving neurodiverse workplace practices and understanding. Drawing from her creative approach and deep understanding of neurodiversity, she specializes in crafting personalized support strategies that address the unique needs of both educational institutions and corporate environments.
