Joshua and Christian dive into the original Kingdom Hearts (2002) and the big idea is clear fast: friendship is the power — "My friends are my power" — cheesy but true. Joshua says this game is his fave and he plays it every year because it hits his nostalgia sweet spot. Christian calls the combat clunky but says the boss fights and Disney crossover vibes keep him hooked. They laugh about gummy ships, fight over platforming, and nerd out over worlds like Hollow Bastion and Halloween Town. They also talk about recent KH4 leaks and how the news always drops right after they record. Joshua says he’ll do a members-only bonus to spoil the leaked trophies.

Joshua and Christian roll up their sleeves and nerd out over the original Kingdom Hearts like two pals at a late night diner. Joshua is the walking museum of nostalgia. He says he plays this game every year. He loves the clunky platforming and the goofy combat. He digs the feel of being a kid with a wooden sword that somehow turns into the Keyblade. Christian calls it clunky but charming. He stans the boss fights. They both smile at the weirdness: gummy ships that run on smiles, random Disney crossovers, and goofy platform jumps that make no sense but still slap.

They go world by world, name-drop favorites (Hercules, Halloween Town, Tarzan, Aladdin) and point out why the choices actually matter. Joshua says every world has a reason to be there. Christian is hyped about Beast’s devotion to Belle and how that fits the story. They laugh at the moments that are pure cheese. Yet they also agree those cheesy bits hit hard. The big line—"my friends are my power"—gets treated like the anthem it is. It’s corny. It’s honest. It is why Joshua keeps coming back to this game year after year.

Takeaways:

 * Joshua and Christian are playing every Kingdom Hearts game in order for the 25th anniversary.
 * They talk about a Steam trophy leak that spoiled some Kingdom Hearts 4 world info.
 * Joshua and Christian argue if people should watch leaks or go in cold for surprises.
 * He loves the original Kingdom Hearts for its cheesy friends are my power message and nostalgia.
 * They note the game mixes kid stuff with dark themes like death and identity in bold ways.
 * Christian praises boss fights and Disney world choices, but calls platforming clunky and combat dated.
 * Joshua describes the Sora and Kairi scene as powerful, about true friends seeing you even when lost.
 * They reflect on deep questions about soul, heart, and who someone really is after trauma or change.
 * They invite listeners to join their membership, bonus episodes, merch and Discord to geek out together.

Kingdom Hearts: 'My Friends are My Power' (cheesy, but true)

Andy Walsh and Jill Elizabeth dig into Derek Walcott's stage version of The Odyssey, emphasizing its Caribbean retelling and how that shift remakes the poem’s tone and themes. He says the play’s playful language and stage directions make it feel like something that really needs to be seen, not just read. She loved the use of Billy Blind as a bard and the oral‑tradition rhythm that turns the sea from antagonist into companion. They riff on gods who lose clear moral authority, Penelope as more human and teasing, and a delightfully side‑questy Odysseus rather than a pure hero. He reminds listeners this was a member‑voted pick for the All Reading Counts series and she plugs merch and bonus content — all proceeds go to public libraries. It’s a warm, witty chat that makes a 3,000‑year‑old story feel refreshingly local, playful, and very stageable.

Andy gets the ball rolling and Jill hops right in, and together they peel back Derek Walcott’s island-flavored Odyssey with a grin. He teases out the basics—Telemachus hunting for his dad, Odysseus bumbling through Cyclops, Circe, Sirens—while she keeps nudging the Caribbean lens, saying the sea here feels like a neighbor, not an enemy. He compares it to Nolan’s big-screen take and Homer’s grand poem, she praises Walcott’s musical rhythms and Billy Blind as the bardly storyteller who makes the lines beg to be heard aloud. They swap theater-kid banter about how the play probably shines brighter onstage than on the page; he imagines the staging, she imagines the laughs from the servant roles. Casual, funny, and oddly tender about a 3,000-year-old tale getting a new accent.

They also wink at the play’s playfulness: Odysseus isn’t a marble statue of heroism here but a human with side quests and questionable priorities. She points out the clever dialect shifts—formal lines for the high-born, Caribbean lilt for the servants—that poke at who gets taken seriously. He applauds Walcott’s wordcraft and the oral-tradition vibe, while she dreams of seeing the Scylla/Charybdis tentacle sequence live. It’s a breezy, warm conversation that makes ancient epic feel like a neighborhood tale with punchlines and poetry.

Takeaways:

 * Jill praised Derek Walcott's Caribbean-set stage version, noting Billy Blind channels oral storytelling with lively Caribbean rhythm and humor.
 * Andy pointed out that the play's staging would add colors, textures, and comic moments the page alone can't deliver.
 * They reminded listeners that All Reading Counts merch and bonus-episode proceeds are donated to public libraries to promote literacy.
 * Jill observed that setting the Odyssey in a Caribbean lens changes the sea theme into something nurturing rather than purely adversarial.
 * Andy noted Walcott's rewrite makes Odysseus feel more human, distracted, and walked through side quests instead of constant heroics.
 * Jill loved how servants' Caribbean dialects undercut 'proper' language, playfully challenging who and what gets treated as important.
 * They teased a bonus 'Muppet Odyssey' idea, inviting members to hear which fuzzy puppets would play gods, heroes, and the lone human.

Turning Homer Tropical: A Playful Take on The Odyssey (and why the sea isn’t the enemy)

Kevin and Christian dig into how Martha and Jonathan Kent basically built Superman’s moral GPS, arguing the Kents are the real force behind who Clark becomes. They romp through movie and comic examples — from the 1978 film Smallville moments to All-Star and Red Son flips — showing how different origins still bow to the Kents’ influence. They joke about being tired and sick but get surprisingly deep about how those farm‑style values beat out flashy Kryptonian backstories. They even tie the Kents to real‑life grandparents, cooking, and the whole nature vs. nurture debate in superhero form. They close by asking listeners to shout back with hot takes, and they thank supporters while keeping the banter light and nerdy.

Kevin kicks things off a little groggy and Christian sniffles through it, but they power through a warm, homespun dive into why Jonathan and Martha Kent are the quiet engine behind Superman. He teases out how the Kents aren’t just background props—these two plant the moral compass that turns an alien child into a neighborly legend. They riff on how continuity swings (one run the Kents live, another they don’t) yet the core traits—honesty, work ethic, and stubborn Midwestern kindness—keep resurfacing. He drops affectionate nods to the 1978 Superman movie’s funeral scene and its music, and they both agree those Smallville moments matter more than some critics claim.

Christian plays tour guide through comics and alternate universes, pointing to All-Star Superman, Absolute Superman, Red Son and various Elseworlds as thought experiments: swap the Kents’ values and you get very different super-people (and sometimes monsters like Brightburn). They unpack nature vs. nurture in comic form with a wink—remove Ma and Pa and you might accidentally invent a supervillain. He even notes the Kents’ Methodism as a subtle origin of Clark’s conscience, which writers often tiptoe around. Between nostalgia, personal anecdotes about grandparents who “could cook like Martha,” and recommendations for readers, they keep it light, witty and affectionate.

Takeaways:

 * Kevin notes that Ma and Pa Kent's Midwestern values shape Clark's moral compass far more than his Kryptonian heritage.
 * Christian observes that across movies, comics, and TV shows the Kents consistently embody warmth, moral guidance, and groundedness.
 * They agree that removing the Kents or changing their ideology often creates darker, morally compromised super-figures like in Brightburn and Irredeemable.
 * Kevin gushes about Glenn Ford's Jonathan in the 1978 film, calling that farewell scene absolutely crucial and emotionally devastating.
 * Christian highlights comic moments like All-Star Superman issue six and Action Comics Annual 2022 to showcase parental influence on Clark.
 * They talk about Red Son, The Nail, and Absolute Universe takes to show how different cultures or mistakes alter Superman's path dramatically.
 * Both hosts personally connect the Kents to their grandparents, praising cooking, blunt care, and the everyday heroism of steady family values.

Welcome to my dojo, this is Kung Fu Pizza Party. Today, to celebrate the two year anniversary of the show, I sit down with Christian Ashley of Systematic Geekology to re-review The Undisputed 2025 Downloads Champion, The Karate Kid pt 2. In this review, Christian offers his reasons why he thinks this film is better than the original, I pitch how I think the original trilogy should have ended, and we celebrate the acting performance of Pat Morita.

The Karate Kid pt 2 (Round 2) - Kung Fu Pizza Party

Kevin Schaefer and Evan Garcia jump straight into two big takes: they rave about Coyote vs. Acme as a surprisingly sharp, emotionally honest live‑action/animation hybrid and dig into Lanterns as a moody, adult‑leaning Green Lantern mystery that’s more True Detective than cape parade. They break down Coyote vs. Acme’s origins (yes, inspired by that New Yorker gag piece), how the film survived a studio write‑off to become a smart legal underdog story packed with classic Looney Tunes gags, and why the movie’s use of professional voice talent and honest storytelling is a blueprint Hollywood should steal. On Lanterns they map out the show’s stripped‑down, detective‑thriller approach to Hal Jordan, note the series’ bravura performances and complicated themes (race, community, and what duty looks like), and flag the storytelling beats that leave questions about Hal’s choices—and promise answers in the remaining episodes. They warn listeners that spoilers fly freely during the deep dives, but still sprinkle in lighter stuff: a lightning round about comics, Breaking Bad/Better Call Saul re‑watches, and some podcast recs. Evan pitches the Disney Dish podcast for theme‑park nerds, while Kevin tells folks to read Tom King’s Mr. Miracle if they want a dark, humane comic that resonates with the show’s vibe. Witty banter, insider nerd riffs, and heartfelt takes keep the conversation breezy—think smart pop‑culture analysis with a cup of coffee and a wink.

Kevin kicks things off with his trademark laid-back hype and Evan settles in like the chill co-host who actually read the receipts — together they geek out over two big-ticket items: the recently rescued theatrical romp Coyote vs. Acme and the moody HBO/DC series Lanterns. He walks listeners through the show’s playful structure: a lightning-round of personal picks (comics, Breaking Bad/Better Call Saul rewatch energy, and nostalgia-fueled TV recs), then a deep-dive double feature where they go spoiler-heavy. The vibe is casual but sharp; Kevin teases the audience like a buddy at the pub and Evan drops memories of late-night Cartoon Network mornings — both bringing that warm, slightly snarky banter the podcast leans on. When the convo turns to Coyote vs. Acme, they explain the basic premise clearly — a downbeat small-town lawyer named Kevin (Will Forte) accidentally takes on Wile E. Coyote’s suit against the mega-corporation ACME for decades of cartoonish carnage — and why that setup matters.

They unpack the film’s wild production backstory (studio cancellation, another company swooping in to save it), praise the writing for blending legal-thriller beats with sincere emotional arcs, and call out standout moments: a tearful courtroom beat between Coyote and Roadrunner, slick human/cartoon animation integration, and surprisingly thoughtful themes about persistence and late-stage capitalism. Humor lands in that relaxed, witty register — they lampoon the industry, praise professional voice actors over celebrity casting, and marvel at John Cena playing a gleeful a-hole. The summary wraps up noting the hosts’ enthusiasm — they recommend the film to families and nerds alike while keeping it real about the movie’s messy-but-ambitious writer-room DNA.

Takeaways:

 * They agreed Coyote vs. Acme is a surprisingly smart live-action/animation hybrid, mixing legal-thriller beats with rom-com heart and delivering genuine emotional payoffs alongside classic cartoon gags.
 * Evan points out the film uses Looney Tunes tropes—impossible physics, packing huge gags into tiny spaces—not just for nostalgia but to deepen character arcs and teach basic storytelling principles.
 * Kevin and Evan praised how another studio swooped in to save the movie after a corporate write‑off, celebrating that the film’s anti‑megacorporation message landed loudly and vindicated taking creative risks.
 * They noted the movie low‑key throws shade at late‑stage capitalism and corporate indif

Surf Ninjas - Kung Fu Pizza Party

Joshua and Christian pick up part two of their Birth by Sleep deep-dive, wrapping up the game's story — Terra's fall and fusion with Xehanort, Aqua's sacrifice in the Realm of Darkness, Ventus slipping into Sora's heart — and tease how those beats feed into the larger Kingdom Hearts canon. Joshua rambles with affectionate geek energy about lore, worldbuilding, and how the Disney worlds land emotionally, while Christian fires off structured takes about narrative mechanics, Star Wars parallels, and why Birth by Sleep still slaps as a top-tier entry. They debate gameplay bits (PSP hardware who? this played like a full console release), rate the game sky-high, and nerd out over features they'd love to see again — D-Link antics, multi-perspective worlds, and even an Inside Out crossover if Nomura’s feeling spicy. The conversation leans into the series’ recurring motif of “faces behind us”: mentorship, failed teaching, and friendship as both balm and blindfold, with both hosts sharing which character arcs they personally vibe with. If someone needed a one-stop recap before Kingdom Hearts 4 hype, Joshua and Christian deliver the lore, laughs, and recommendations (yes, play it; yes, read the light novel) with chill banter and surprisingly deep theological-level pondering about darkness, anger, and nuance.

Joshua and Christian deliver a lights-on appraisal of Birth by Sleep’s gameplay and worldcraft, giddily surprised that such heft came out of what was essentially a portable-era title. Christian gushes about the D-Link system, crafting, and the beautifully purposeful use of Disney worlds—Stitch, Cinderella, Maleficent all slot into character arcs rather than mere fan-service. Joshua marvels that the PSP-era presentation doesn’t feel small: cutscenes, pacing, and emotional heft make it feel like a full-numbered mainline entry. Both agree it’s a 10 within the franchise, citing character work (Aqua hype!), lore payoff, and the sense that the game was beloved enough that Nomura found ways to revive characters fans couldn’t bear to lose.

They speculate on what to borrow for Kingdom Hearts 4: tighter, multi-perspective worlds; more dynamic combat like KH3; and, selfishly, a return of D-Link-style mechanics so Sora can steal Donald’s spells in style. Christian hopes for Inside Out to get pulled into the roster (perfect fit for the emotions-as-worlds angle), while Joshua wants Donald and Goofy reunited with Sora pronto. Practical recs land too: preferred play orders (Terra–Ventus–Aqua vs. Ventus-first for emotional anchoring), and shout-outs to the Birth by Sleep light novel for folks who aren’t gamers but still want the story. The summary reads like a gamer-to-gamer love letter: choreography of combat, tears for lore, and wishlist items for the future.

Takeaways:

 * Joshua riffs that Birth by Sleep brilliantly blends the idea of a guiding heart with the heart's deceitful tendencies, teaching both hope and wary caution.
 * Christian points out Terra, Aqua, and Ventus function as deliberate foils to Sora/Riku/Kairi, exploring mentorship failures, manipulation, and the cost of misplaced trust.
 * They agree the lore is dense and sometimes convoluted, yet praise Nomura's worldbuilding for delivering emotional heft and layered historical connections.
 * Joshua and Christian geek out over Aqua's tragic arc and Ventus ending up inside Sora's heart — both plot beats the fans absolutely clamored to see revisited.
 * On gameplay, the hosts dig the D-Link system and PSP-era technical chops, but they want Kingdom Hearts 3’s faster, flashier combat sensibilities to return.
 * Christian neatly argues against demonizing emotions: anger and sadness aren't inherently evil, and Birth by Sleep raises needed nuance about using darkness for ends.
 * They recommend reading the Birth by Sleep light novel and suggest playing Ventus first, Terra second, and Aqua last for maximum narrative payoff.

Birth By Sleep: How to Change Your Heart's Perspective (Part 2)

Joshua Noel and Christian Ashley dive straight into Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep while unpacking the fresh Kingdom Hearts 4 trailer—talking the Coco world reveal, the surprise anime, and why the Dandelion/mobile-era lore actually matters for what’s coming next. Joshua, the obsessive fan who can’t stop geeking out, rides shotgun and he gets hyped about Disney finally putting real money behind the franchise; Christian, the patient co-host, plays the sober counterpoint and he admits Nomura’s weird choices still Stockholm him into loving the ride. They dig into Birth by Sleep’s meat — Terra, Aqua, Ventus, and a manipulative Xehanort whose Star Wars/Star Trek vibes make the whole prequel feel like a space-opera soap opera — and they tease how the game’s themes of friendship, perspective, and balance still hit hard despite the goofy “Gorsh, the forces of darkness” moments. Joshua explains how the Dandelion dispatch, Strelitzia, and Sigurd from the dead mobile games are threaded into KH4’s setup, so the announced anime or comics could patch lore gaps for newcomers. Christian mounts a calm defense of Aqua — she isn’t a Mary Sue because she fails, sacrifices, and pays real costs — and both of them praise the triple-perspective storytelling that makes Birth by Sleep emotionally resonant. They close by promising a follow-up deep-dive (and a members-only bonus) about hoped-for KH4 worlds, cameos, and summons — basically, the kind of nerdy wishlist that keeps the fandom delightfully unhinged.

Joshua and Christian roll up their sleeves and geek out hard about Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep, treating listeners to a relaxed, clever walkthrough that mixes heartfelt feels with straight-up nerd banter. Joshua plays the hype-man, buzzing about the fresh D23 reveals — Coco as a world, a Kingdom Hearts anime, and the mysterious Dandelion dispatch — while Christian brings the calmer, analytical muscle, sketching out why Disney finally seems to be taking the franchise seriously. They riff about Nomura doing Nomura things, Disney maybe leaning in on merch and media, and the community reaction when Heartless crash a Coco-style stadium reveal. Expect jokes about Spock-voiced Xehanort and Luke Skywalker energy, and a signature laugh over Goofy shouting Gorsh at the forces of darkness.

Beyond the laughs, the hosts keep it thoughtful: they map how Birth by Sleep fits ten years before KH1, why the Dandelions and mobile-game lore matter to KH4, and why the new anime could be the perfect medium to fill gaps. They tease a bonus members-only segment about desired KH4 worlds and cameos, shout out longtime supporter Frank, and gently remind listeners to rate, review, and join the community. It's hype mixed with heart — like a cosplay of a therapist who still brings a Keyblade to show-and-tell.

Takeaways:

 * Joshua and Christian hype Birth by Sleep's trio dynamic—Ventus, Terra, Aqua—and how friendship, loyalty, and perspective drive the emotional core of the story.
 * They nerd out about the D23 Kingdom Hearts 4 trailer, celebrating Coco as a world, the anime announcement, and Disney finally putting real money behind the franchise — hype, no cap.
 * They stress that obscure mobile-game lore like the Dandelion Dispatch, Strelitzia, and Sigurd matters deeply for KH4's setup, arguing those inaccessible bits still seed future plotlines and fan theories.
 * Christian unpacks Xehanort and Master of Masters' manipulation, comparing Terra's fall to an Anakin-esque tragedy and emphasizing the series' recurring philosophical question: what balance between light and dark actually means.
 * They praise the game's trio-perspective storytelling for fostering empathy and showing how miscommunication and partial information enable manipulation — and they joke that if the heroes had cell phones, much of the drama would've been avoided.
 * Christian gives a pointed defense of Aqua as far from a Mary Sue, noting her tangible fai

Birth By Sleep: How to Change Your Heart's Perspective (Part 1)

A ragtag crew of pop‑culture icons race to restore life across collapsing worlds by chasing Maui's hook and returning the Heart of Te Fiti — and they end up squaring off with a grief‑driven Tony Stark and a well‑meaning Celebrimbor who’ve been “forging” life in all the wrong ways. Joshua Noel, the GM, moons in and out of exposition, dropping the players on Motunui and basically saying “fix it” with minimal paperwork. TJ Blackwell and our guest, Mark Flower, pick an absurdly fun lineup to play through this story - Deborah from the book of Judges, Princess Shuri from Black Panther, Elphaba from Wicked, Appa from ATLA, and Long John Silver from Treasure Planet. The group immediately bicker, banter, and break into a musical number to distract Tamatoa. Elphaba provides chaotic magical flair while Shuri brings tech savvy, and they balance each other as the plot wrestles with a juicy ethical snag: is creating life at all costs justified, even if it means trampling other lives? The ride includes buffed Kakamora ambushes, a Going Merry jaunt to Mount Doom, a shoe‑button weak spot in Tony’s suit, a persuasive prayer that changes the course of events, and a final score that smashes the Geeks on a Roll leaderboard. They leave things both healed and messy — which, of course, means there’s ripe material for a sequel and a lot of post‑game chatter about utilitarian temptations and who really gets to make life.

Chaos meets conscience as a ragtag crew of pop-culture weirdos—Deborah, Princess Shuri, Elphaba, Appa, and Long John Silver—are plunked down on Moana's Motonui with dying trees and rotten coconuts. The GM, Joshua, tees up a straight-to-the-point quest: nab Maui's hook, snag the Heart of Te Fiti, and maybe not wreck everything in the process. They chase a glowing hook to Tamatoa, survive a buffed-up Kakamora ambush (because of course the small fry had to be extra spicy), and pull off a delightfully absurd musical moment when Elphaba serenades the giant crab. Tamatoa is neither fully villain nor punchline—he's depressed, shiny-less, and convincing enough that negotiation and song beat pure slaughter.

From there the plot pivots meta: Tony Stark shows up in an organic, life-spawning suit forged with Celebrimbor, explaining a utilitarian impulse to “fix life” by force and technology. The team wrestles with whether to stop him, steal his juice, or yank the Heart back to where it belongs. Shuri's tech savvy, Deborah's steady leadership and prayer roll, Elphaba's witchy skepticism, Appa's snack-driven practicality, and Silver's opportunistic charm all collide in a series of tense-but-hilarious interactions. Will the team be able to heal Earth 616, Arda, and the island of Motunui - or will they defeat themselves?!

Takeaways:

 * We discuss “theology is play” as a way to let story sneak past our defenses and teach ethics more joyfully than dry argumentation, which made the episode surprisingly thoughtful and not preachy.
 * They cobbled together a weird Guardians-style ragtag crew—Deborah, Shuri, Elphaba, Appa, and John Silver—whose clashing leadership vibes created tasty conflict and comedic gold.
 * Mark and TJ wrestle with a messy utilitarian quandary when Tony uses the Heart of Te Fiti to manufacture life, prompting debate about whether good ends excuse ethically dubious means.
 * Joshua ran a fast, improv-heavy campaign with musical interludes, bargain-flipping pirate antics, and cinematic set-pieces, keeping the pacing spicy and delightfully unpredictable.
 * TJ and Mark solved problems by blending strengths—Shuri’s tech smarts, Elphaba’s magic, Deborah’s decisiveness, Appa’s mobility, and Silver’s cheeky opportunism—illustrating cooperative creativity over brute force.
 * Joshua, TJ, and Mark all flag hubris as the real antagonist: Tony and Celebrimbor’s well-intentioned overreach shows how unchecked power and utility-minded fixes can backfire spectacularly.
 * They kept the vibe

Geeks on a Roll: A Life Forge-ry
