Continuing our Black History Month celebration, Sara brings us one of the most important Broads whose research and advocacy has led to vast improvements in the early education, and lives of black children across the country: Dr. Evelyn Moore.

As a founding teacher of the Perry Preschool Project, she and her fellow educators proved that quality educational experiences transformed the lifelong success of impoverished children - not just in their long-term education, but in every aspect of their lives!

She would go on to found and run the National Black Child Development Institute (NBCDI) for 38 years, testifying in front of Congress to establish legislation to protect and uplift these youngest, most vulnerable members of our society. Listen now to hear her story!

Our education system and DEI initiatives are under attack by the new administration. For Broads You Should Know, this means we're doubling down on our devotion to both! Today Sara brings you Marian Wright-Edelman! Marian was the first Black woman admitted to the Mississippi bar and was a integral part of the Civil Rights movement including Freedom Summer and The Poor People's Campaign. She was one of the lawyers who helped make segregation illegal!

After moving to Washington D.C. Marian would go on to found The Washington Research Project, which would become the Children's Defense Fund - arguably the most impactful organization and advocate on behalf of children in the United States. Marian Wright-Edelman - Founder of the Children's Defense Fund

Last week we dove into the legend of "Argentina's First Lady" Eva Perón. We started from the outside in; What is it that people say about her today? What does her foundation and museum say about her? What does she say about herself in her autobiography? We found a LOT of mythology in the mix - she was obviously an incredible figurehead that helped transform Argentina and the lives of her descamisados (the shirtless ones). But the legend felt heavy with a rose colored tint and a LOT of swirling rumors portraying a darker side of the story so in Part 2 Sara attempts to thread the needle and discover the heart of the story.

Who was Evita? Why do we see so much conflict and such disparate versions of her story? How can a woman both be so adored by the public that she draws incredible crowds and makes the cover of Time Magazine, but also has to end her European tour early because the crowd threw tomatoes at her?!

Sara brings us a more complete version of the story - the dramatic history that led up to Evita & Juan Perón's rise, what Peronism stands for and accomplished for the Argentine people, and why Peronism and the the Peróns were targeted to heavily by the media and the oligarchy of their time. Eva "Evita" Perón - Part 2: The Truth, the Lies and Everything In Between

Maria Eva Duarte Perón grew up in poverty with her mother after the death of her father. Falling in love with performance, she became a radio star, model and then moderately successful actress. An activist from early on - she took on leadership roles with the actor unions and became politically active - eventually meeting Juan Perón at an event and almost never leaving his side.

As Juan's popularity with the people grew, the people in charge grew distressed, eventually arresting him. But after large protests he was released and was soon thereafter elected President of Argentina, with Evita as his side as First Lady.

The work they did in Argentina to help the poor and protect the people is truly astonishing. The influence of the Perón Foundation and Peronism are still felt strongly in Argentina today and Evita is widely lauded as the country's most influential woman of all time - establishing women's rights including the right to vote, and helping pull countless people out of abject poverty through social services.

But as we know on this podcast, the story isn't always so simple. In Part 1 of this 2-Part Broad, Sara brings you the Evita that you see in the museums and on the streets of Buenos Aires, including some of the controversy that still thrives on the lips of the people. Then next week we'll dive deeper into the rumors and the history to see if we can uncover some of the deeper truths of her story.

Mayor Karen Bass - Los Angeles' First (and Best!) Female Mayor

Sara's Broad of the Year - the woman who has made the most profound impact on women and women's rights this year is none other than Giséle Pelicot. This week saw the conclusion of the criminal trial against her ex-husband who drugged her without her knowledge, and 50 other men who r@ped her when she was drugged over the course of a decade. Giséle made the incredible choice to not only NOT remain anonymous, as most victims do in these proceedings, but ALSO to insist that the press and public be allowed into the courtroom, and that the video evidence of the crimes be played for all in the courtroom.

This four-month trial has shaken France, but Giséle's actions have moved the women of France to stand up and speak out against the was women are treated in French society, and by the judicial system, the police and the hospitals. The impact of the trial, Sara thinks, may lead to great change from the women of France, and hopefully for the world.

Broad of the Year - Giséle Pelicot

When Alexander the Great defeated Thebes in 335 CE him and his soldiers decimated the city - killing 6,000 Thebans and enslaving over 30,000. In the process, a drunk, disorderly captain forces his way into Timoclea's home, sexually assaults her, and attempts to rob her of her wealthy property. But clever Timoclea talks this drunk ahole into retiring her gold from an empty well, and when he goes to fetch it, she throw a boatload of big rocks down into the well - possibly by herself, possibly aided by her maids, but either way, she stones that guy to death and when she's brought in front of Alexander to answer for her crime - her response elicits a shocking response from the up and coming most-powerful-man-on-earth.

What does Alexander do? Moreover, who is this guy Plutarch and how did he even know Timoclea's story that happened 400 years prior? You'll have to listen to find out!

Timoclea - OG Greek Revenge Killer

Did you know that one of the most popular American Board games of all time - MONOPOLY - was actually invented by a Broad?! That right! Lizzie Magie invented THE LANDLORD'S GAME to help teach the concept of Georgism to the masses, and even patented it in 1904, 30 years before the Monopoly patent was filed. 

As we dive down the rabbit hole we discover not only more about the incredible multi-hyphenate and radical feminist Lizzie was, but also how her beloved game fell into the hands of Charles Darrow, and ultimately was purchased by the then-struggling Parker Brothers. Broad Opinions - What Do We Do Now? A Post-Election Reflection

Beatrix Leslie is an 84-year-old midwife living just outside Edinburgh, Scotland in 1661, which happened to be a very bad period of time to be a disliked elderly woman in the community because it was smack dab in the middle of the Great Scottish Witch Trials of 1661-1662.

During a span of literally 16 MONTHS over 660 people were publicly accused of witchcraft in that neck of the woods, and Beatrix, unfortunately, was one of them. Listen now to learn exactly what she was accused of, and how the way her trial went down made it utterly impossible for true justice to be rendered. (HINT: John Kincaid is one of the biggest *ssholes of all time).

You're also going to learn a whole lot about the Scottish Witch Trials - how they became the some of the largest, most deadly witch trials in human history, and how the government (who caused this fiasco in the first place) was able to break the witch fever that had such an insane hold on the region.
