What if Pride & Prejudice was a comedy stage show? What if the entire cast of book characters are portrayed by just five female actors?  What if the story was being retold through the eyes of the servants who witnessed it, and involved rather a lot of karaoke?

Stefanie and Melinda discuss what worked, what choices left them a little confused, and completely forget to talk about their favourite joke in the whole play (it was about a Vienetta, IYKYK) as they tackle their first live performance review, for Pride & Prejudice* (*Sort Of) by Isobel McArthur.

Pride & Prejudice* (*Sort Of) by Isobel McArthur

What if Pride & Prejudice was set in the 2010s, where Lizzie Bennet was on a media internship? What if she captures the wild and wonderful plot from Pride & Prejudice on camera? What if Lydia Bennet becomes a fan favourite – and pod favourite – character?

Melinda and Stefanie discuss the arrival of Darcy, and Lydia breaking our hearts in a well-executed Wickham scandal in our second episode on the huge adaptation that is The Lizzie Bennet Diaries.

The Lizzie Bennet Diaries: Part Two

What if Pride and Prejudice was set in the 2010s, where Lizzie Bennet studied communications and vlogged her daily life? What if she reenacted her life with props and costumes? What if it is one of the best depictions of the Bennet sister relationships on screen?

Melinda and Stefanie discuss how iconic YouTube was in 2012, the birth of social media and transmedia storytelling and amazing character writing in the first episode on The Lizzie Bennet Diaries.

The Lizzie Bennet Diaries: Part One

What if Pride & Prejudice was set in an American College (again)? What if Elizabeth and her sisters were actually friends who live in the same dorm building? What if Darcy is a famous TV star who has come to their college to hide out after a hugely public and embarrassing breakup with a much more famous star?

Stefanie and Melinda discuss niche cultural references, gender-flipped Wickhams, and masterful modern updates on niche character traits in The Bennet Women by Eden Appiah-Kubi.

The Bennet Women by Eden Appiah-Kubi

What if Pride & Prejudice was set in India? What if it was an all-out musical extravaganza? What if Darcy was a snobbish, fish-out-of-water American businessman who thinks that chinos are appropriate poolside attire?

Stefanie and Melinda discuss vibrant musical numbers, the joy of an adaptation that truly understands its character's motivations, and the second-best fight scene in Pride & Prejudice adaptation history, in Bride & Prejudice directed by Gurinda Chadha.

What if Pride & Prejudice was a full-blown romantasy novel? What if the Bennet sisters had to marry to access their magic? What if Mr Bingley was part werewolf and Mr Darcy has the most romantasy name of all time?

Melinda and Stefanie discuss witches without magic, fantasy tropes and men with zero communication skills in Potions & Prejudice by Tee Harlowe.

Potions & Prejudice by Tee Harlowe

What if Pride & Prejudice took place in the wave of Egyptomania that followed Napoleon's surrender in Egypt? What if Darcy was a treasure-hunting adventurer who craved more than just being really, really ridiculously rich? What if Lizzy inherited her father's love of Ancient Egypt and was a very talented translator of hieroglyphics?

Stefanie and Melinda discuss this adaptation being set at the birth of Egyptology (which happens to perfectly align to when Austen was penning her novels), some downright horrifying facts about ancient mummies, and what it feels like to finally get a Mr Bennet who isn't vying for the role of "Worst Father in the Austenverse", in Shadow of Anubis by Adele Dixon.

What if Pride & Prejudice was set at an American film school? What if our Elizabeth Bennet is a student who recruits her Darcy to star in her reality TV show where students confront their crushes on camera? What could possibly go wrong?

Melinda and Stefanie discuss the dramatic twists and turns of reality TV, men dancing shirtless on social media, and the definition of ‘cuffing’ in The Cuffing Game by Lyla Lee.

The Cuffing Game by Lyla Lee

What if Pride & Prejudice was about a hopelessly romantic American named Jane who dropped her life savings on a trip to England to take part in a personalised fantasy romance at a Regency themed live-in experience? What if the woman who owns the venue it is inexplicably horrible to her the whole time? What if she accidentally falls in love with her own Mr Darcy for real?

Stefanie and Melinda discuss the absolutely stacked cast of Jane Austen adaptation alumni who feature in the film, the obsession in early aughts films with depicting single women in their 30s as desperate losers, and the intense flashbacks this movie gave them to particular (and particularly unhinged) adaptation that featured in Season 1, in Austenland directed by Jerusha Hess.

What if Caroline Bingley was the main character and we learn what happens to her after Pride & Prejudice? What if she ends up embroiled in a murder case alongside Georgiana Darcy in London? What if she discovers she is pretty good at solving crimes?

Melinda and Stefanie discuss murder mysteries, characters changing for sequels and flying wombs in Miss Caroline Bingley, Private Detective by Kelly Gardiner and Sharmini Kumar.

Join your hosts Stefanie and Melinda as they dive deep into the world of adaptations of Jane Austen's beloved novel Pride & Prejudice, where some are fabulous, some aren’t their cup of tea, and some are delightfully unhinged. It's Austen, but not as you know it.

(Please note that while Apple has given the pod an "explicit" rating, the very few swears are bleeped and the hosts do not discuss any spicy scenes outside of noting their presence in the storyline. To get to know what the pod is and isn't about, give the Welcome episode a listen!)
