In this episode Shana sits down with legendary hedge fund manager, Cliff Asness, to discuss how advisors can best evaluate alternative investment strategies whether public or private.

Cliff is a Founder, Managing Principal and Chief Investment Officer at AQR Capital Management. He is an active researcher and has authored articles on a variety of financial topics for many publications, including The Journal of Portfolio Management, Financial Analysts Journal, The Journal of Finance and The Journal of Financial Economics. He has received five Bernstein Fabozzi/Jacobs Levy Awards from The Journal of Portfolio Management, in 2002, 2004, 2005, 2014 and 2015. Financial Analysts Journal has twice awarded him the Graham and Dodd Award for the year’s best paper, as well as a Graham and Dodd Excellence Award, the award for the best perspectives piece, and the Graham and Dodd Readers’ Choice Award. He has won the second prize of the Fama/DFA Prize for Capital Markets and Asset Pricing in the 2020 Journal of Financial Economics. In 2006, CFA Institute presented Cliff with the James R. Vertin Award, which is periodically given to individuals who have produced a body of research notable for its relevance and enduring value to investment professionals. Prior to co-founding AQR Capital Management, he was a Managing Director and Director of Quantitative Research for the Asset Management Division of Goldman, Sachs & Co. He is a trustee for the American Enterprise Institute and the Atlas Society. He is on the governing board of the Institute of Mathematical Finance at NYU, the ambassador board of the Journal of Portfolio Management and a board member for the Q-Group. He is a member of the board of trustees and the investment committee for the National World War II Museum.  He is also an advisory board member for the Adam Smith Society.

Cliff received a B.S. in economics from the Wharton School and a B.S. in engineering from the Moore School of Electrical Engineering at the University of Pennsylvania, graduating summa cum laude in both. He received an M.B.A. with high honors and a Ph.D. in finance from the University of Chicago, where he was Eugene Fama’s student and teaching assistant for two years (so he still feels guilty when trying to beat the market).

As President of Toews Eben helps oversee the culture and direction of the firm which specializes in creating strategies designed with the clients financial and emotional wellbeing in mind. Eben advocates bringing behavioral psychology, introspection, and empathy into portfolio construction, planning, and communication.   

Eben is a lecturer and coach of applied behavioral finance as part of the Toews Managing Investor Behavior™ program. He also facilitates communications between the investment management team at Toews and its partners and producing advisors. He holds the Series 7, 65, & 63 licenses. Prior to joining Toews, Eben was the principal of the Burr Tibbs Group, consulting for private equity and high net worth individuals in New York City real estate. Mr. Burr graduated from Oberlin College with a BA in history in 1995, attended architecture school in Paris at L’Ecole Bleue and received a Master’s Degree from Pratt in New York City in 1999. He is currently attending Kansas State University where he is pursuing a graduate certificate to become a Certified Financial Therapist, expanding on his experience to learn to train professionals who want to improve clients’ financial health by integrating relational, behavioral, cognitive and emotional elements with personal finance. He lives in Manhattan with his wife and son and lots of guitars.

Cory Johnson serves as Chief Executive Officer of Pender Capital and brings over 20 years of experience in real estate acquisition, development, finance, and asset management. Mr. Johnson co-founded Pender Capital Management in 2015 and is responsible for the firm’s strategic vision and financial success. The firm is an SEC-registered investment advisor, specialized in U.S. based real estate credit opportunities. Since inception, the firm has funded over $676,900,000 in loans, secured by commercial real property collateral valued in excess of $1,060,676,301*. Prior to Pender Capital, Mr. Johnson founded several opportunistic real estate funds, which deployed value-add strategies through asset repositioning, while maintaining attractive risk-adjusted returns for investors. In 2012, Mr. Johnson co-founded Latitude Properties, LLC, a vertically integrated real estate investment firm focused on the acquisition, stabilization, and disposition of distressed single-family residences throughout Central and Southern California.  In 2008, Mr. Johnson served as Managing Partner and Co-Founder of Paladar Capital Investments, L.P., and Montero Capital, LLC, with each fund specializing in the acquisition and repositioning of distressed single-family residential assets.  From 2006 to 2008, Mr. Johnson served as land acquisition manager for M.D.C. Holdings, Inc., the nation’s 9th largest homebuilder at the time, where he was responsible for acquiring prospective development sites based on suitability requirements. From 2002 to 2005, Mr. Johnson served as a business development representative for Weyerhaeuser Mortgage Company, a GE Consumer Finance company. During his tenure at GE Consumer Finance, Mr. Johnson’s team originated more than $525 million in residential debt.  Mr. Johnson holds a bachelor’s degree in economics from the University of California, Santa Barbara.
