Introduction and Coronavirus Concerns

00:00:14
Speaker
Hi guys, welcome to the Expat Brad podcast.
00:00:17
Speaker
It's Salman Qureshi.
00:00:19
Speaker
I hope you all are doing really well, particularly because of stupid coronavirus going around.
00:00:26
Speaker
It's really, really gone down badly, hasn't it?
00:00:31
Speaker
It's kind of shit everywhere now.
00:00:34
Speaker
We're all laughing at not having that problem.
00:00:38
Speaker
But now it's spread everywhere.
00:00:40
Speaker
And I'm worried about traveling.
00:00:42
Speaker
I got to admit, like, I'm not when I say traveling, I mean, I'm not even talking about international borders anymore.

Personal Impact and Family Concerns

00:00:50
Speaker
I'm talking about the trip to the grocery store.
00:00:54
Speaker
How much are you supposed to panic when shit like this happens?
00:00:58
Speaker
Because when it first broke out, I told my wife, Sarah, and she said she panicked.
00:01:07
Speaker
It broke out and she was just like, oh, we got to be careful.
00:01:12
Speaker
We can't go out here or there.
00:01:14
Speaker
Keep the kid at home.
00:01:15
Speaker
Lock up.
00:01:16
Speaker
Let's shoot everybody.
00:01:17
Speaker
No, no, she didn't go that far.
00:01:19
Speaker
But I feel like it was in her voice to just get rid of everybody who has it or something.
00:01:25
Speaker
But I played it down, you know?
00:01:29
Speaker
I just played it down.
00:01:30
Speaker
I went, no, no, it's in China.
00:01:33
Speaker
It's not coming here.
00:01:35
Speaker
And it's probably just, you know, like a flu thing.
00:01:39
Speaker
And it's just going to die out soon.
00:01:41
Speaker
Don't worry about it.
00:01:42
Speaker
There's nothing to be scared about.
00:01:45
Speaker
Now, now my dad's stuck.
00:01:46
Speaker
He's trying to fly in.
00:01:48
Speaker
He lives in Iran and he can't fly out, man.
00:01:51
Speaker
So I'm a little worried for him and worried in general because, you know, flights have been canceled and it's kind of

Challenging Stereotypes in Comedy

00:01:58
Speaker
spread everywhere.
00:01:58
Speaker
Now, Europe, North America, it's kind of gone over there.
00:02:03
Speaker
So what do you do?
00:02:04
Speaker
How much how much what level of panic?
00:02:07
Speaker
Are we supposed to be at, people?
00:02:10
Speaker
I need to know.
00:02:12
Speaker
I need to know.
00:02:13
Speaker
I will panic accordingly.
00:02:14
Speaker
I'm a sheep.
00:02:15
Speaker
I'm not a leader.
00:02:17
Speaker
I just need to be told now.
00:02:19
Speaker
Salman, just panic a lot.
00:02:21
Speaker
Okay?
00:02:22
Speaker
Panic a lot.
00:02:23
Speaker
I'll do it.
00:02:24
Speaker
All right?
00:02:25
Speaker
If you tell me don't panic, I'll be like, okay, all right, fine.
00:02:29
Speaker
Just like I told my wife not to panic.
00:02:32
Speaker
I need someone to tell me that I'm hearing different things from different people.
00:02:35
Speaker
How are you all feeling about it?
00:02:37
Speaker
Well, I hope you're feeling great.
00:02:38
Speaker
I hope you're not feeling coronavirus-ish.
00:02:41
Speaker
Do you get what I mean?
00:02:43
Speaker
Because if you are, well, you can always tune in and listen to my podcast.
00:02:48
Speaker
That's the worst part of becoming sick.
00:02:52
Speaker
Please, God, don't give me coronavirus.
00:02:54
Speaker
I'll have to stay home.
00:02:56
Speaker
I've watched everything on Netflix.
00:02:57
Speaker
I've listened to every podcast in the world.

Diversity in Netflix Comedy Specials

00:03:00
Speaker
All I've got is having to listen to the Expat Brat podcast.
00:03:04
Speaker
Please don't do this to me.
00:03:07
Speaker
Oh, dear.
00:03:08
Speaker
I was reading stuff online and I can't believe, you know, that's the topic of this podcast, I suppose.
00:03:14
Speaker
It's this thing I read online, some new survey about men being funnier than women in comedy.
00:03:22
Speaker
I can't believe we're still talking about this, man.
00:03:25
Speaker
I can't believe stuff like if you go into it, I don't know if you guys saw it, but if you go into it, you'll realize it's very unscientific.
00:03:33
Speaker
Because they're like, oh, you know, we asked a few people and those few people might have been men.
00:03:41
Speaker
And this wasn't very scientific.
00:03:42
Speaker
I mean, really, I just asked a couple of my friends and we thought, what about women?
00:03:47
Speaker
Are they funny?
00:03:48
Speaker
And all of them said no.
00:03:50
Speaker
And there you go.
00:03:51
Speaker
There you go.
00:03:52
Speaker
Men are funnier than women.
00:03:55
Speaker
It's crap.
00:03:57
Speaker
It's bullshit.
00:03:58
Speaker
You know, I was looking up this list that came up of, and there's always these kind of lists coming up, but the one I just saw, it came out a few days ago.
00:04:06
Speaker
It rated all the top 16.
00:04:09
Speaker
Random number, by the way, like 16.
00:04:13
Speaker
Why?
00:04:13
Speaker
10, 20.
00:04:14
Speaker
Keep it, keep it.
00:04:15
Speaker
Yeah, just round it up, man.
00:04:17
Speaker
What's 16?
00:04:18
Speaker
Why 16?
00:04:19
Speaker
16 top stand-up comedy specials on Netflix.
00:04:24
Speaker
And I was like, all right, I'm intrigued.
00:04:26
Speaker
I was intrigued because Dave Chappelle's picture was like the title picture, the header.
00:04:31
Speaker
You get what I mean, right?
00:04:32
Speaker
So I clicked on it.
00:04:33
Speaker
Clickbait.
00:04:34
Speaker
I got clickbaited.
00:04:36
Speaker
And I clicked on it and he was number one.
00:04:38
Speaker
He was not number one.
00:04:39
Speaker
No.
00:04:40
Speaker
You know who was number one?
00:04:41
Speaker
John Mulaney.
00:04:42
Speaker
I think it was based on ratings on Rotten Tomato.
00:04:46
Speaker
And what's the name of his, what's the name of that special?
00:04:51
Speaker
And I got nothing against him.
00:04:53
Speaker
I got nothing against him.
00:04:54
Speaker
It's a comeback kid.
00:04:55
Speaker
That's right.
00:04:55
Speaker
That's what's number one on Netflix apparently.
00:04:59
Speaker
And it's very interesting to go through that list because Dave Chappelle comes in at third.
00:05:03
Speaker
And there's like a he's the only non-white male comic in the top 10.
00:05:09
Speaker
I think the next guy that shows up is Hasan Minhaj.
00:05:13
Speaker
And that's crazy, you know.
00:05:15
Speaker
And what I'm trying to say is when you look at these things, there's a reason.

Importance of Representation in Comedy

00:05:20
Speaker
I'm not I'm not saying this list is wrong because I suppose it's based on people watching it.
00:05:26
Speaker
But what's worrying is when white male comics complain about, oh, we're being, you know, targeted.
00:05:32
Speaker
It's not that.
00:05:33
Speaker
It's the fact that there's not enough representation.
00:05:36
Speaker
They're not coming through.
00:05:37
Speaker
And you can't tell me white male people are funnier than other people.
00:05:42
Speaker
It's just not scientific.
00:05:44
Speaker
Okay?
00:05:45
Speaker
The reason they're more white male comics is because traditionally they've done more stand-up comedy.
00:05:49
Speaker
They've had more exposure.
00:05:50
Speaker
They've had more role models to copy.
00:05:54
Speaker
And it's changing now, but there you go.
00:05:56
Speaker
Interesting list.
00:05:57
Speaker
I suppose another list, non-Netflix maybe, or overall you'd have a lot more diversity.
00:06:03
Speaker
But it says something about...
00:06:06
Speaker
What we're picking out.
00:06:07
Speaker
And this coming back to the point with the women thing, it's this kind of bullshit being spread is, you know, it's not good because women are left feeling more pressurized.
00:06:18
Speaker
I get it because as a Pakistani origin person.
00:06:24
Speaker
I'm a Pakistani-origin person.
00:06:26
Speaker
Pop, they call me.
00:06:28
Speaker
P.O.P.
00:06:30
Speaker
I never pictured myself doing stand-up until I saw a Pakistani-American dude doing stand-up comedy.
00:06:37
Speaker
Saad Haroon, a friend, a good comic.
00:06:40
Speaker
But until I'd seen him live, I kind of never really thought I would do stand-up comedy.
00:06:45
Speaker
So that's the importance of role models.
00:06:48
Speaker
What it does is you go, oh...
00:06:50
Speaker
we can do it too.
00:06:52
Speaker
It's dumb as it sounds.
00:06:54
Speaker
And for people who haven't had that problem because you've had those role models all your life.
00:06:59
Speaker
So it's unconscious to you.
00:07:01
Speaker
For people like me, it was important to see that and go, oh, yeah, it's possible.
00:07:04
Speaker
I'm allowed to do it

Gender Perceptions in Humor

00:07:06
Speaker
too.
00:07:06
Speaker
You know, it's as crazy as that sounds.
00:07:08
Speaker
As young people, it makes a big impression.
00:07:11
Speaker
And women being told constantly they're not funnier than men, I feel bad about that because it's not true.
00:07:18
Speaker
In fact, there was another survey.
00:07:20
Speaker
I got to find it.
00:07:21
Speaker
You got to look it up.
00:07:22
Speaker
The survey talks about...
00:07:23
Speaker
how the reason men are perceived funnier than women.
00:07:27
Speaker
And women, you gotta take note of this as well, right?
00:07:29
Speaker
So it's important.
00:07:30
Speaker
According to that study, it was because men were perceived as funnier because they tend to crack more jokes.
00:07:40
Speaker
It's like a machine gun effect, right?
00:07:42
Speaker
So they'll fire off 20, 30 jokes in the same amount of time where women would fire off five jokes, you know, whatever the math was, I can't remember.
00:07:52
Speaker
But that was the basic idea.
00:07:55
Speaker
And because they're machine gunning jokes out, saying 20, 30 jokes, there's a higher chance some of them, the total number that will land will be higher.
00:08:04
Speaker
So they'll end up telling five funny jokes, right?
00:08:08
Speaker
Five of them will land.
00:08:09
Speaker
And that's how comedy works.
00:08:10
Speaker
You just got to do a lot to find out which bits are funny.
00:08:13
Speaker
And women, on the other hand, because they're doing less, they're trying less jokes in general.
00:08:18
Speaker
They'll have with the same ratio, they'll end up with overall less jokes that landed.
00:08:23
Speaker
So out of five, maybe one might land, two might land.
00:08:26
Speaker
And so you see the guy having five jokes that were funny versus the woman who had two jokes that were funny.
00:08:34
Speaker
And so you go, oh, you know, that guy is hilarious.
00:08:37
Speaker
And that's this isn't specific to individuals.
00:08:40
Speaker
It's an overall group thing that's happening.
00:08:43
Speaker
And so if you're a female comic or not a comic, but, you know, just if you're a female, I think you got to be a bit more brave with it and try.
00:08:52
Speaker
I know it's harder because you've been told and it's I don't know, man, the cultural pressure, blah, blah, blah.
00:08:57
Speaker
It's easy for me to say, yeah, just joke around more.
00:09:00
Speaker
Come on, then.
00:09:03
Speaker
Well, we might be at a funeral.
00:09:04
Speaker
It's OK.
00:09:05
Speaker
I want to hear you crack some jokes.
00:09:07
Speaker
All right.
00:09:08
Speaker
Remember what Salman said about number of jokes you got to crack.
00:09:13
Speaker
We might be all dying here, but I need you to die funny.
00:09:17
Speaker
Okay?
00:09:18
Speaker
So there you go.
00:09:18
Speaker
That's a little, you know, math for you guys and the issue around.
00:09:24
Speaker
And also, also the thing with the women and the men thing.
00:09:27
Speaker
It's a little unfair when we say, spread that kind of nonsense.
00:09:32
Speaker
Because I tried Googling women are funnier than men and everything that showed up was men are funnier.
00:09:39
Speaker
All the links were about men are funnier than women.
00:09:42
Speaker
So there's not enough information out there about this stuff, right?
00:09:45
Speaker
So you get what I mean, right?
00:09:46
Speaker
Like that's how fake news happens, people.
00:09:51
Speaker
That's right.
00:09:51
Speaker
Fake news.
00:09:53
Speaker
That's real fake news.
00:09:55
Speaker
You get it?
00:09:56
Speaker
So if you want to change things around, stop saying nonsense like that.
00:10:00
Speaker
Keep it cool.
00:10:01
Speaker
Women are as funny as men.
00:10:03
Speaker
I think they're funnier sometimes.
00:10:05
Speaker
And okay, that's not scientific either.
00:10:08
Speaker
So don't, I don't know.
00:10:09
Speaker
Just stop fighting over this shit, man.
00:10:11
Speaker
Just the people who are funnier than other people because they work hard at their comedy or their humor or their jokes.
00:10:17
Speaker
That's

Promoting Local Comedy Events

00:10:18
Speaker
it.
00:10:18
Speaker
That's the bottom line.
00:10:20
Speaker
Everything else is mute.
00:10:21
Speaker
Okay.
00:10:22
Speaker
Capisce?
00:10:23
Speaker
We got this.
00:10:23
Speaker
All right.
00:10:24
Speaker
Now that we've settled that, there's no argument with that.
00:10:27
Speaker
You got to know that what I'm saying is the truth.
00:10:31
Speaker
I just want to round this off with... I thought I'd add this because, you know, I'm in the comedy scene in the UAE and there's not enough information being passed around.
00:10:40
Speaker
So if you're listening in because you're a comic or listening in because you're a comedy fan, I assume those are two reasons you tune into my podcast here in the UAE.
00:10:49
Speaker
Oh, my.
00:10:50
Speaker
Yeah.
00:10:50
Speaker
Yeah.
00:10:51
Speaker
So if you do, then let me just tell you in the coming week this week, we're at Monday.
00:10:55
Speaker
So the coming week, we're going to get Wednesday night.
00:10:58
Speaker
Go check out the Maestro Showcase at the Courtyard Playhouse.
00:11:01
Speaker
It's a great improv comedy night.
00:11:03
Speaker
It's really funny.
00:11:04
Speaker
Most times, almost all the time.
00:11:06
Speaker
Got some good players.
00:11:07
Speaker
It's a really fun format.
00:11:08
Speaker
Gets the crowd involved by getting them to cheer on their favorite funny people on stage and whatnot.
00:11:14
Speaker
So go check that out.
00:11:15
Speaker
It's really good.
00:11:16
Speaker
And the Monday after, we're starting our Bollywood Improvise Showcase.
00:11:20
Speaker
And that's Rushdie and I, Rushdie Falcomic, Rushdie Rafiq, really funny.
00:11:24
Speaker
You know what's so funny about it?
00:11:26
Speaker
My mom was at a show.
00:11:28
Speaker
She hadn't watched me do stand-up in a while.
00:11:31
Speaker
She came, she watched me, and he was on the bill as well.
00:11:35
Speaker
And then afterwards, she's like, he was the funniest.
00:11:38
Speaker
And I'm standing right there.
00:11:39
Speaker
I'm like, Mom, I'm right here, right here.
00:11:42
Speaker
That's how funny that guy is.
00:11:43
Speaker
My mom, you know, she didn't care about it.
00:11:47
Speaker
the scars she's leaving on me.
00:11:48
Speaker
That's how funny the guy is.
00:11:50
Speaker
Anyway, so the two of us are putting on this Bollywood Improvise showcase with a few other performers as well.
00:11:55
Speaker
Really funny people.
00:11:57
Speaker
And so come down, check that out.
00:11:58
Speaker
That's on the following Mondays, a week from now.
00:12:00
Speaker
And just a three-week run, so do try making it.
00:12:04
Speaker
Last time we had to turn people away.
00:12:06
Speaker
So have fun.
00:12:07
Speaker
Get in there quick.
00:12:08
Speaker
Mark this one on the 12th of March.
00:12:11
Speaker
My friends in Abu Dhabi, Yellow Laughs, they are having...
00:12:14
Speaker
Their fifth year anniversary.
00:12:16
Speaker
Big shout out to those guys to keep comedy going.
00:12:19
Speaker
Started and keep it going in Abu Dhabi, which did not have any kind of scene at all before these guys got in and started working hard at it.
00:12:28
Speaker
And I'm so proud that they're doing completing five years.
00:12:31
Speaker
That's awesome, man.
00:12:32
Speaker
You guys don't know how much hard work these guys have put into that.
00:12:35
Speaker
And I think all the comics around the UAV appreciate it.
00:12:38
Speaker
So good on you, John and Eric.
00:12:40
Speaker
Well done.
00:12:41
Speaker
Lastly, just to round this off, there's Kickers in Sports City.
00:12:45
Speaker
If you live on that side of this town, every Friday night, they've got a really good room.
00:12:50
Speaker
It's usually packed out and some great, you know, you've got new and experienced comics out.
00:12:55
Speaker
Coming in, the comedy night is free.
00:12:57
Speaker
So do drop in for that if you live on that site.
00:12:59
Speaker

00:13:01
Speaker
It's a really fun Friday night.
00:13:03

00:13:25
Speaker
That's going to be at Muscovites.
00:13:27
Speaker
It's a bar club kind of lounge.
00:13:30
Speaker
It's really cool.
00:13:31
Speaker
Really nice stage.
00:13:32
Speaker
So we're kicking off.
00:13:33
Speaker
We've kicked off last Saturday and every Saturday for a couple of weeks, we'll be performing there.
00:13:38
Speaker
So and again, it's a free night.
00:13:39

00:13:43

00:13:45
Speaker
I hope you enjoyed this episode as usual.
00:13:47
Speaker
Make sure you subscribe, link, you know, share, whatever.
00:13:50
Speaker
And also, if you want to support me, then there's a link and you can tip me something, $2, whatever you want.
