Introduction to Star Wars Cleaning Crew

Grab your droids and brooms and hit the kitchen. It's time for the Star Wars cleaning crew starting now.

Hello, welcome to the Cleaning Crew. My name is Bob. I'm your host. Now you might be wondering why in the world do we need another Star Wars podcast? Well, I have an answer for that. I love listening to Star Wars podcasts. I'm going to talk more about my Star Wars journey in just a second, but I love listening to Star Wars

podcasts. The thing is, is I like listening to podcasts when I am cleaning the kitchen.
00:00:34
Speaker
And what I find is it takes me about 15 minutes or so to clean the kitchen every time. And most Star Wars podcasts that I like will go on for half an hour, an hour, two hours. So sometimes it takes me a long time to get through them all. I mean, you have to clean the kitchen every day.
00:00:53
Speaker
But it's hard to jump back in and out. So I thought, wouldn't it be fun if we had a Star Wars podcast and every episode was less than 15 minutes, which is the time that it takes to clean my kitchen. So thus was born the Star Wars cleaning crew. And I'm happy to have you with us.
Identifying the Audience
00:01:12
Speaker
Now, chances are, if you're listening to this,
00:01:15
Speaker
you're probably in one of three camps. Number one, you're either part of my family or a personal friend who I invited to come listen to this. So if that's true, hi, thanks for being here. I love you. Thank you for being here and supporting me as I start this podcast. That's really great. The second camp would be people who listen to my other podcast, which is the learning geeks. Now learning geeks is a,
00:01:41
Speaker
corporate learning focus podcast that I do with my friends Dana Koch and Jake Gittleson. We have been doing that podcast for about six years. And as I said, what we talk about on The Learning Geeks is corporate learning things, but we always delve into Star Wars, Marvel stuff, pop culture,
00:02:00
Speaker
All three of us are Star Wars fans. And we did a few episodes earlier that were really Star Wars focused. We would call them Star Wars after shows or Star Wars special episodes. And we would talk to, oh, we would talk to friends like Dan Zier from Coffee with Kenobi, who I'm going to have on the show here very soon. Or we would just talk about things like the premiere of The Mandalorian. We all watched it together. And we recorded a podcast right after, which was great.
00:02:27
Speaker
Now, that podcast, the one about the Mandalorian, we actually got a ton of views of that inside our company where we worked, which

was funny. But usually the feedback that we would get back on those was that people who are into corporate learning may or may not be into Star Wars. So they tend to like the Star Wars nuggets that we drop in there. But when we talk too much about Star Wars, we get some flack.
00:02:56
Speaker
I thought, hey, let's start a new spin off of The Learning Geeks, and that would be this episode. So that's another objective of this podcast is to give The Learning Geeks fans who like the Star Wars content something that they can listen to on a regular basis and kind of keep the peanut butter and the chocolate away from each other in that regard.
The Batooin Wrecky Newsletter
00:03:18
Speaker
So that's one camp of people who could be here.
00:03:21
Speaker
The third camp of people would be people who subscribed to a little newsletter that I used to do called the Batooin Wrecky. Now the Batooin Wrecky was something I invented way back, what is it? It's five years ago now. It's five years ago in May that Star Wars Galaxy's Edge opened at Disneyland and at Walt Disney World.
00:03:44
Speaker
I live really close to Disneyland. I live about half an hour away. And so I of course was very excited. I should add too. I'm a super big Disney fan. I probably could do a Disney podcast as well. But I was really excited and was tracking the development of Star Wars Galaxy's Edge.
00:04:03
Speaker
And I was really tuned into the idea that it was going to be a real world that you could interact with, with people and aliens and have missions and adventures. And I thought a couple of things is number one. I thought, well, stories are going to be unfolding as we're there and I'm going to be there a lot. I would probably be there every couple of weeks or so. Stories are going to be unfolding across the land and people who are interested might want to hear about what's going on.
00:04:31
Speaker
So I thought, let's make a little in-universe newspaper called the Batoo and Reki, where we can keep people updated on what's going on in the planet of Batoo, the planet where Star Wars Galaxy's Edge takes place. That was one objective. The other objective was to explain in in-universe terms, the real world stuff that would happen in developing a Star Wars theme park. So, for example,
00:04:57
Speaker
I knew that they would be selling Coca-Cola products. And I thought, well, how in the world did Coca-Cola products get to the Star Wars universe? So I wrote a little story about that or about building toy lightsabers and things like that. So that was the core of the Batu and Reki. And I wrote a bunch of those articles, got some fans, got some followers. As I said, you might be one of those people.
00:05:21
Speaker
I haven't written a Batuu and Reki in probably a couple of years now. And I'll tell you the reason for that. The reason is because when Disney decided that the events of Star Wars Galaxy's Edge would basically happen,
00:05:36
Speaker
the same day, repeating over and over and over again, like Groundhog Day, I realized I just didn't have a lot of content because the stories that I talked about weren't going to be generated. We were going to do a reset every day. So it's hard to keep that going. It was hard to come up with new ideas and new content. So I kind of just let it slide. So if you were a fan of the Batu and Reki, you know, maybe at some point I'll get back to it. I'm sure I'll talk a lot more.
00:06:05
Speaker
about Star Wars Galaxy's Edge as this podcast continues.
Bob's Star Wars Story
00:06:09
Speaker
So please tune in for that. But this is kind of a replacement for that. So that's why I am here. All right. Now, let me tell you a little bit about my own Star Wars story. I did the math. I first saw Star Wars, which, you know, for all you young kids, let's call it episode four of New Hope. When I was a kid, we called it Star Wars. That's all it was, because that's all we had.
00:06:35
Speaker
I had to do the math on it. I was in fourth grade, so I was 10 years old when Star Wars first came out. And you may have heard George Lucas interviewed saying that he created Star Wars for 10 year old boys. Well, I was one of those exact 10 year old boys that he created the first movie for. Well, the movie came out on May 25th, 1977, as I'm sure everybody here knows.
00:07:00
Speaker
Um, we made our first attempt to try to see Star Wars on May 29th, which was the following Sunday. And it was kind of a funny story. Uh, it was only playing in two theaters in the Chicagoland area where I grew up. The closest one was the Eden's theater, uh, on the, the North shore of Lake Michigan. And it was probably 45 or 50 minutes away from where I lived in the little town of Cary.
00:07:30
Speaker
And so May 29th, we decided, my mom decided she was going to take me and my brother to go see it. And she had read about, I think she had read the time article saying it was the next Wizard of Oz. So we decided we were going to go see it. But
00:07:46
Speaker
My dad at that current time was every Sunday was hosting a home church service for us because we weren't really going to a church at that time and he still wanted to have Sunday church so he had us do
00:08:03
Speaker
Sunday morning church and we were all like, hey, come on, we got to get going. This movie is going to start. It's going to be full. And my dad kept going with Sunday morning church. And sure enough, we were late getting out the door. We were late getting to the theater by the time we got there.
00:08:21
Speaker
The line was around the building and there was just no way that we were gonna be able to get in and see it. Knowing what I knew now, I probably would have waited the two hours for the next show, but we didn't do that. We went home and instead the following Friday, which was June 3rd, my mom said, okay, come home from school quick because we're going to hop in a car, we're gonna go see Star Wars, we're gonna have dinner afterwards. And so I went to see it that first day.
00:08:50
Speaker
And I remember sitting there in the theater, 10 years old, I, of course, was captured from the moment that the Star Destroyer first went over your head, chasing the Rebel blockade runner over Tatooine. And from that moment, my imagination was captured. I remember a lot about that first viewing. I remember when Luke got pulled over, pulled under the water by the dionoga in the trash compactor and thinking, could Luke possibly die?
00:09:18
Speaker
Like, is that where the story is going? I thought he was a goner, so I was on the edge of my seat. I also remember thinking that once they got the plans back to Alderaan and Princess Leia, and they started talking about this attack on the Death Star, that it was going to be like a ground assault. They were going to be, you know, storming the Death Star and running through the halls to do everything. It didn't click with me that they were going to be flying these ships called X-Wings to attack the Death Star. And so when that space battle actually happened,
00:09:46
Speaker
I was just absolutely riveted. I absolutely loved it. And the movie ended, and I was just sitting there in awe. My brother sitting next to me said, that was the best movie I've ever seen. And I said, that is the exact same with me. I always loved movies up until then, but from then on, I was captured. And, you know, of course, when I was in college, I kind of tuned out of it a little bit. Those were the dark days before the Timothy Zahn books first came out.
00:10:16
Speaker
But wow, when the Timothy Zahn books came out, I was back into it. That was when I had just started my job after graduating from college, and it felt like returning to old friends and old family, and I have been hooked ever since.
00:10:31
Speaker
I'm sure that as time goes on, I'll be telling you a little bit more about my Star Wars story, but that's who I am. And so I hope that you will join us every week or so. I'm sure I'll skip a couple of weeks, but the idea is every week or so, 15 minutes for you to spend at least one day cleaning your

the theme music for Star Wars Cleaning Crew, I just happened to discover this new AI-driven website. And in my job, I'm really focused on how people learn and new tools and everything that can help for learning things. And we're spending a lot of time on AI-generated stuff right now. I found a tool called Suno.com, S-U-N-O. And to test it out, I said, hey, why don't you write me
