Introduction and Setup
00:00:07
Speaker
Hey, hey, hey, everyone.
00:00:09
Speaker
Welcome to the Expat Brad Podcast.
00:00:11
Speaker
It's Amon Qureshi, and I'm recording this from outside my house.
00:00:16
Speaker
Like, I'm on, I'm out and about, and I need to get this episode in.
00:00:23
Speaker
If this sounds a bit crappy, I apologize in advance.
00:00:27
Speaker
But persevere through the episode because it's such an exciting one.
What is Galentine's Day?
00:00:32
Speaker
Because we're talking about...
00:00:35
Speaker
love and Valentines and how it's the best thing that's ever happened to men and women.
00:00:42
Speaker
And I can't I can't keep going on with this.
00:00:45
Speaker
Guys, before you we even like get into the Valentine stuff, I got I got to tell you this right to my wife.
00:00:51
Speaker
She does a lot of events.
00:00:52
Speaker
She gets called into these branding exercises and whatnot.
00:00:56
Speaker
And she does beautiful life illustrations.
00:00:59
Speaker
And she told me the day before she's going out, and I'm like, what's this event about, right?
00:01:05
Speaker
And she says it's a Galentine event.
00:01:08
Speaker
And I didn't know what it was.
00:01:10
Speaker
Galentine is the first time I've heard it.
00:01:12
Speaker
I didn't know this thing existed.
00:01:13
Speaker
It's been around for a while apparently.
00:01:15
Speaker
But Galentine is when all the single girls who want to have dates on Valentine's Day, they go out a couple of days.
Critique of Galentine's Day
00:01:25
Speaker
Well, I think it's supposed to be on the 13th.
00:01:28
Speaker
So they go out and they get whatever, they party, they get drunk or whatever they do so that on the 14, they're not super upset.
00:01:36
Speaker
And the one she was going to was like two days before.
00:01:41
Speaker
But I was like, it doesn't solve the problem because you wake up on the 14 and you're still single and you'll still be upset.
00:01:47
Speaker
Like, what are you trying to do?
00:01:50
Speaker
I just think it's one of the most self-absorbed things.
00:01:53
Speaker
horrific things you can do.
00:01:55
Speaker
It's the whiniest thing you can do.
00:01:59
Speaker
There's a holiday and it's about love.
00:02:02
Speaker
It's about expressing love and finding love and rekindling love or whatever the...
00:02:12
Speaker
The whole holiday is about love.
00:02:15
Speaker
And you got to make it about yourself.
00:02:18
Speaker
You can't let people in love just be happy.
00:02:21
Speaker
Just go, you know what?
00:02:24
Speaker
They've got some love.
00:02:26
Speaker
Everybody all the time now has to make everything about them and their situation and how it's not fair.
00:02:35
Speaker
And these galentine people...
00:02:39
Speaker
Oh, they just basically, they're just like, hey, I'm single.
00:02:44
Speaker
So I'm just going to make this, you know, try to steal the focus about this.
00:02:48
Speaker
And I just wanted a bit about me.
00:02:49
Speaker
And I just want to remind everyone I couldn't find love.
00:02:53
Speaker
You know, the reason you might be celebrating Galentine, there might be good valid reasons, but I have a strong feeling if you're the type that's been doing Galentine for a while, that might be the reason because you're whiny.
00:03:06
Speaker
I know this sounds mean.
00:03:08
Speaker
Maybe it is, but I think it's mean of those people to not just get in on it, man.
00:03:16
Speaker
There are holidays that I don't like.
00:03:19
Speaker
There are holidays that I'm like, oh, my God, I have to spend loads of money on gifts and stuff.
00:03:26
Speaker
And some of it is B.S., right?
00:03:28
Speaker
But I don't sit there and just, it's like you've started Galentine.
00:03:33
Speaker
You're the, what is it, the Scrooge?
00:03:36
Speaker
Is it the Scrooge?
00:03:37
Speaker
What's it called, the Christmas person?
00:03:40
Speaker
The people who don't like celebrating Christmas and are like all hell bent.
00:03:44
Speaker
You get what I'm saying, right?
00:03:46
Speaker
Like, I think it's okay if you don't like a holiday, but you don't have to reverse it and make it about you.
00:03:52
Speaker
All right, so this Galentine thing, as far as I'm concerned, the first time I heard it, man, please, please don't do that to yourself.
00:03:59
Speaker
Please don't celebrate stuff like that.
00:04:01
Speaker
At most, it's probably like some campaign by some brand and go, hey, how do we get all these single women to buy our product?
00:04:11
Speaker
Let's make them feel important.
00:04:13
Speaker
What's the day they feel the least important?
00:04:16
Speaker
And we'll make it about that.
00:04:19
Speaker
So now they're making sales on Galentine's and Valentine's.
00:04:22
Speaker
I think it's genius.
00:04:24
Speaker
Whoever came up with it from an economic point of view, you're a genius, man.
00:04:29
Speaker
And I don't say, man, it might be another woman.
00:04:35
Speaker
It's just brilliant from that perspective.
00:04:37
Speaker
For those who are being sucked into it, save yourselves.
00:04:41
Speaker
Get out of that party.
00:04:42
Speaker
If someone invited you next year again, just just don't do it.
00:04:46
Speaker
I hope you remember this podcast and just don't do that stuff.
Saudi Arabia and Valentine's Day Ban
00:04:50
Speaker
OK, because Valentine's gets a lot of flack about it.
00:04:55
Speaker
You know, growing up in Saudi, it wasn't again, you know, back in the day, like crazy stuff.
00:05:03
Speaker
Initially, when I started hearing about Valentine's as a kid, I remember it was such a cute thing in my head.
00:05:10
Speaker
I got flowers for my first girlfriend.
00:05:13
Speaker
I got flowers for my mom just because I was like, this is cute.
00:05:17
Speaker
I want her to get flowers.
00:05:19
Speaker
And then a year or two after that, I think the religious police kind of woke up to it and went, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.
00:05:28
Speaker
What's this Western influence happening out here?
00:05:31
Speaker
And so they banned Valentine's.
00:05:35
Speaker
And that meant what they did was that red, you know, just the color red was kind of like banned around Valentine's.
00:05:41
Speaker
You weren't allowed.
00:05:42
Speaker
They'd be vigilant about watching you trying to sell some stuff that could be perceived as Valentine-ish.
00:05:50
Speaker
It's amazing, isn't it?
00:05:52
Speaker
And so red balloons, red cards, anything that's said Valentine's, they confiscate it.
00:05:58
Speaker
They stop you from doing it.
00:05:59
Speaker
And anyway, technically, it was illegal for unmarried people to be out on dates.
00:06:05
Speaker
So that was always a thing.
00:06:07
Speaker
But then on top of it, even if you were married, it didn't allow you.
00:06:11
Speaker
to celebrate Valentine's Day.
00:06:14
Speaker
All right, so it went, and then a couple of years ago, they announced, like, they've been celebrating it as such, again, you know, such a remarkable change of attitude towards something that really,
00:06:27
Speaker
isn't a big deal to do, right?
00:06:30
Speaker
So it's amazing to see that.
India's Cow Hugging Proposal
00:06:33
Speaker
places, I see the same crap happening.
00:06:35
Speaker
The funniest thing after the Galentine's thing that I heard, I love Valentine's because it gives you so much of these wonderful, hateful stories.
00:06:46
Speaker
In India, if you haven't heard this, man, you got to read up on it.
00:06:50
Speaker
In India, because of this extreme right-wing parties in power, and they've been all extreme nationalism in India and everything about the West is wrong and blah, blah, blah.
00:07:06
Speaker
And so they wanted to, they've been, over the last few years, what they've been doing is like they'll attack people celebrating Valentine's.
00:07:12
Speaker
It's kind of horrific sometimes as well.
00:07:15
Speaker
If you're on a date in a park or something, I think they've forced some of them to get married on the spot there.
00:07:20
Speaker
And, you know, just crazy stunts like that.
00:07:23
Speaker
But this year they thought, we'll encourage people to celebrate Valentine's by hugging a cow instead.
00:07:33
Speaker
Oh, my God, that's gold.
00:07:36
Speaker
Like sometimes when I think about writing comedy, I am not brilliant enough to come up with stuff like that.
00:07:41
Speaker
Like this is stuff I would have thought would come up in parody films or something.
00:07:48
Speaker
But no, they went for it and they're trying to really push it and go hug a car.
00:07:54
Speaker
And then they had to stop it because there's such a funny backlash that basically the internet exploded with memes and whatnot about it.
00:08:05
Speaker
Some of the funniest stuff I saw was about getting consent from the cow and whatnot, and rightfully so.
00:08:12
Speaker
And that just made them scurry away and kind of played it cold about it.
00:08:17
Speaker
But whenever you hear these things, when this happens,
Valentine's Day in Pakistan
00:08:22
Speaker
can't help but imagine the meeting at which this was confirmed.
00:08:30
Speaker
There must have been a bunch of these people sitting around, and they went, how do we stop Valentine's from happening?
00:08:38
Speaker
And someone, who was that person?
00:08:40
Speaker
I want to dig deep and discover that person because I personally, I want to shake their hand.
00:08:44
Speaker
I want to know if there's secretly a comedy writer that has infiltrated the right wing party.
00:08:51
Speaker
And just shake their hand, man, for that.
00:08:53
Speaker
Because they sat there and they kept a straight face and they went, you know what, instead of people dating and doing that kind of stuff, let's get them to hug cows.
00:09:05
Speaker
And they kept a straight face while they said it, while they suggested that.
00:09:10
Speaker
And and the whole room erupted into.
00:09:15
Speaker
That is a brilliant idea.
00:09:18
Speaker
It's it's what we need to do.
00:09:20
Speaker
It's going to stop people from going down the path of Western values, destruction in our society.
00:09:29
Speaker
And and they went with it and they all went.
00:09:31
Speaker
This is I don't know if anyone in that room went, hey, hey, guys,
00:09:37
Speaker
Is it a little strange, just a little strange that we're asking people to go out and hug a cow on Valentine's.
00:09:46
Speaker
So you're kind of celebrating Valentine's anyway because it is about love, except now we're forcing them to show it to the cow and we're getting people to hug cows.
00:09:57
Speaker
I don't know, I don't feel comfortable about this.
00:10:01
Speaker
You would hope someone would say it.
00:10:03
Speaker
But maybe it's a case of the emperor's, emperor's, emperor.
00:10:11
Speaker
My throat is so bad, I'm trying to get words out.
00:10:13
Speaker
the emperor's clothes situation where everyone's like deep down, they're like, man, this sounds crazy.
00:10:23
Speaker
But outside they're like, I'm going to prove to these people I'm more right wing than the other person.
00:10:29
Speaker
And so they all like double down on it and went, yeah, yeah, that's the greatest idea.
00:10:34
Speaker
And not only that, let's like put flowers on the cow while we're doing it.
00:10:40
Speaker
And while we're doing it, let's let's add a kiss.
00:10:46
Speaker
What point did they say?
00:10:47
Speaker
And then you can take it home and make love.
00:10:49
Speaker
And then they all look at that guy who suggests that and go, dude, dude, no, no, no.
00:10:53
Speaker
It's about showing respect to the cow.
00:10:56
Speaker
Like it's sacred here.
00:10:57
Speaker
What the hell are you doing?
00:10:59
Speaker
And so on, so forth.
00:11:01
Speaker
Yeah, I would just love to be a fly in the corner or a cow sitting there going, you guys might want to consult us before you go ahead with this because we have an opinion about this too.
00:11:19
Speaker
What's your opinion?
00:11:20
Speaker
Well, to be honest, you know, if you would just like, you know, just let me get out of this room because my brain's like falling out listening to you guys.
00:11:29
Speaker
And maybe just keep your distance.
00:11:31
Speaker
I'm not comfortable with PDA.
00:11:36
Speaker
And they're like, no, but this will you like it.
00:11:42
Speaker
There's always something, right?
00:11:44
Speaker
I think I saw somewhere.
00:11:46
Speaker
I didn't get a chance to verify it or look up the actual link.
00:11:50
Speaker
But someone posted about the Supreme Court of Pakistan saying Valentine shouldn't be celebrated or should be banned or is banned.
00:11:59
Speaker
I don't know if it's old news or it was this year around, but I saw something floating.
00:12:03
Speaker
It just came to my mind because I was laughing about these things.
00:12:07
Speaker
And you would think in a country where you have cases piling up and it takes years, decades sometimes to get justice, you think the judges wouldn't be, the Supreme Court wouldn't be wasting time going, hey,
00:12:20
Speaker
Let's talk about Valentine's Day, right?
00:12:23
Speaker
Another bunch of old idiots who are just sitting around going, yeah, yeah, let's interfere with how people want to express love and blah, blah, blah.
00:12:32
Speaker
And so they got in on it too, man.
00:12:34
Speaker
If it's true, if it's true, if it's wrong, tell me about it because I'm...
00:12:38
Speaker
I really am not sure about what's going on with that.
Valentine's Day Reflections
00:12:42
Speaker
I just, you know, I just am happy on this day because it just reminds me of of having someone that really loves me.
00:12:54
Speaker
And it's nice, man.
00:12:55
Speaker
And I know I feel bad if you don't have that kind of feeling.
00:12:59
Speaker
If you've never had it, man, you got you got to try harder.
00:13:05
Speaker
And by harder, I don't mean like in a creepy way.
00:13:07
Speaker
I'm not encouraging you to walk up to more members of the opposite sex like in a creepy tone and whatnot.
00:13:16
Speaker
Just mingle more with people.
00:13:18
Speaker
I'm sure you'll find someone.
00:13:20
Speaker
Yeah, you'll find someone.
00:13:22
Speaker
And just don't overthink it about like...
00:13:26
Speaker
You do want someone who kind of matches your values somewhat.
00:13:31
Speaker
But I also think by meeting people, dating, and really getting to know people more, you kind of hone in on like, oh, this is not what I want.
00:13:40
Speaker
And by process of elimination, which, you know, some people say you got to kiss a lot of frogs, you really do get to the point where you're like, this is what I'm really looking for.
00:13:50
Speaker
This is what it really means for you.
00:13:52
Speaker
And it's not the superficial stuff, guys.
00:13:54
Speaker
It's some deep meaning, awesome stuff out there.
00:13:59
Speaker
And when you discover that, you will find that perfect partner and you'll be happy.
00:14:05
Speaker
Obviously, every relationship has ups and downs.
00:14:07
Speaker
So when I say happy, 90 percent of the time.
00:14:10
Speaker
You'll be happy, all right?
00:14:13
Speaker
And it's just nice to remember that, that you have all this love in your life.
00:14:17
Speaker
And so I tell you, man, don't give up.
00:14:20
Speaker
Don't be the person who's fallen back to getting drunk on this day or just being miserable or just having to celebrate Galentine's with other people.
00:14:30
Speaker
Just go out and meet people and you'll find your true love.
00:14:36
Speaker
True love sounds so...
00:14:39
Speaker
like Hollywood, you'll find a partner...
00:14:43
Speaker
who is a great complement to your life.
00:14:47
Speaker
And you'll get an opportunity to see what it feels like to be unselfish and do things for someone else and to feel the same back for you.
00:14:58
Speaker
It's a great learning thing.
00:15:03
Speaker
It helps you grow as a human being, I think.
00:15:07
Speaker
Then you have a kid together and, oh my God, all hell breaks loose.
00:15:13
Speaker
And then you try to fix it by going, let's have one more.
00:15:16
Speaker
You know, the situation, what we need to do is let's add another kid to it.
00:15:24
Speaker
I've got this chesty cough that's not going away.
00:15:26
Speaker
I think it's the weather.
00:15:27
Speaker
It's this allergy and stuff.
00:15:30
Speaker
And it's already getting hot in Dubai.
00:15:32
Speaker
I don't remember Valentine's being this hot in the last few years.
00:15:39
Speaker
And and it's sad, man.
00:15:41
Speaker
I think I start getting a little depressed, like my depression is linked to the rise in temperature correlated, you know, says the temperatures start rising.
00:15:55
Speaker
My depression starts rising and and it's it's it's and I wish I hope there's like another cold wave.
00:16:04
Speaker
for a couple of weeks or something that passes through Dubai because it's still too early to be this hot, right?
00:16:14
Speaker
It's still cool at night and stuff, so do that.
Netflix Password Sharing Issues
00:16:18
Speaker
I finally, I really, I'm just annoyed at like...
00:16:25
Speaker
I know I've said this before, but these Netflix guys and stuff like why are you guys releasing stuff like half broken up?
00:16:31
Speaker
I don't know what that's supposed to achieve, man.
00:16:33
Speaker
Like I just started watching you and then I realized it's four episodes in.
00:16:39
Speaker
Are these weekly episode drops?
00:16:41
Speaker
I know I keep complaining about it.
00:16:43
Speaker
And now I've just given up and I'm just going to wait till all the episodes are out and then I'll watch it at one go or at least like four or five.
00:16:50
Speaker
episodes in so that I don't know.
00:16:53
Speaker
I don't know, man.
00:16:54
Speaker
I just somebody talk to these guys as it is.
00:16:57
Speaker
Everyone's stressed out about the password sharing thing.
00:17:01
Speaker
Like there's some big conversations going on around in families right now.
00:17:06
Speaker
Like how are we going to sort this out, guys?
00:17:11
Speaker
It's going to tear families apart and go, well, Salman was useful for us because, you know, he had a Netflix account.
00:17:18
Speaker
And now we got to pay for our own.
00:17:19
Speaker
So do we really need him in our life?
00:17:24
Speaker
And, um, and that, that's a little sad.
00:17:27
Speaker
I'm, uh, I'm upset about that kind of situation arising and my family realizing why they hang out with me.
00:17:35
Speaker
Um, I hope Netflix doesn't do it.
00:17:37
Speaker
Cause, uh, it's also just, uh, I don't know, man.
00:17:41
Speaker
I'm the kind of person that would be like, you know what?
00:17:43
Speaker
Like just leave it logged on your TV.
00:17:47
Speaker
I'll just end up letting other people use it.
00:17:51
Speaker
I also feel like Netflix is being hacked a lot more because it's been twice in the last two months.
00:18:00
Speaker
So once a month, I guess.
00:18:01
Speaker
In the last two, three months that I've had that email from Netflix going, hey, someone in an obscure country or outside of the UAE has logged into your account.
00:18:11
Speaker
I always go, one of my family members is traveling to this place.
00:18:13
Speaker
I'm like, definitely not.
00:18:16
Speaker
And so, yeah, you're like, oh, shit, someone's possibly hacked in.
00:18:20
Speaker
Gotta change my password.
00:18:23
Speaker
Because I'm just afraid of Netflix now.
00:18:27
Speaker
I'm afraid what they'll do if they find out.
00:18:28
Speaker
I didn't do anything about letting someone use my account.
00:18:33
Speaker
And also, if someone's hacked it, I'm worried that on my profile, they'll watch stuff and it'll ruin my algorithm and I'll get suggestions that are shitty.
00:18:48
Speaker
That's my real concern, okay?
00:18:50
Speaker
That's the thing I'm most worried about.
00:18:52
Speaker
So unfortunately, you know, the people who did hack in, I hope you got a couple of episodes in, got to watch it for a day or so.
00:19:00
Speaker
But I just, I had to, man.
00:19:04
Speaker
If you happen to be listening to this podcast, then I apologize, man.
00:19:08
Speaker
If it was up to me, I'd let you watch it.
00:19:10
Speaker
I'd let you create another profile on my account, but they're at full capacity at this point right now as well.
00:19:18
Speaker
So I just can't help you out.
00:19:19
Speaker
You got to find other people to hack.
00:19:24
Speaker
Look up the people in the Galentine crowd.
00:19:29
Speaker
I guarantee I have this feeling.
00:19:32
Speaker
Strong feeling that they might not have too many people sharing in on their Netflix password.
00:19:38
Speaker
Just putting it out there.
00:19:39
Speaker
I know this might hurt some people a little bit that I put it out like that, but I think that's what's happening.

And they are likely to have Netflix accounts because, you know, well, when they get home, they got to be doing something.
00:20:01
Speaker
I had someone tell me, Salman, you're so fun all the time.
00:20:04
Speaker
And then I listen to your podcast and there's like this little mean streak in there.
00:20:09
Speaker
And maybe it's like my little out, you know, just to listen, just to like kind of have this other vibe going on and see how that feels for me.
00:20:20
Speaker
So this is part therapy, part me addressing an innate human desire to be
00:20:28
Speaker
You know, just mean sometimes it keeps me cool.
Valentine's Improv Show Experience
00:20:33
Speaker
Otherwise, yeah, we've been doing this Valentine's show at the Courtyard Playhouse where I do a lot of improv comedy theater.
00:20:43
Speaker
And and it's always been one of my favorites.
00:20:46
Speaker
There last time doing it tonight as well.
00:20:49
Speaker
We do it like over three nights.
00:20:51
Speaker
If you're in Dubai, you happen to listen to podcasts in time, come down, watch it.
00:20:54
Speaker
But if you didn't, keep an eye out for it next year as well, because it's one of my favorite shows because the format is about using the audience, but not in like a stand up comedy way.
00:21:05
Speaker
It's really tapping into their stories to find some truth and find some loving moments and recreate some of it or look at it from fresh perspectives and
00:21:16
Speaker
And I know it really hits home with people because over the years, that's the one show that so many people I run into go, hey, I was at that Valentine show.
00:21:29
Speaker
And it's still – and a lot of them have come back for other shows obviously.
00:21:33
Speaker
But they remember the Valentine really strongly.
00:21:36
Speaker
I was there that night and it was beautiful.
00:21:38
Speaker
And they remember the work we did, the scenes we created, we improvised.
00:21:43
Speaker
And that's something because after 10 years of this, I don't remember what I did last night in some scene.
00:21:50
Speaker
And for people to remember that, it's nice.
00:21:54
Speaker
It feels like we took time to create something that was important.
00:22:00
Speaker
And, you know, art's got to be fun, but it's nice if art can have that kind of impact, too.
00:22:07
Speaker
So, yeah, I don't know why I brought that up.
00:22:09
Speaker
I think just again, you know, going with the Valentine theme, I think it's nice to it's such a nice opportunity to reflect on it.
00:22:18
Speaker
So if you're a hater, you know, I mean, there are parts of it that I hate.
00:22:23
Speaker
But if you're just a hater for the sake of hating, don't.
00:22:31
Speaker
If you've listened to the podcast, then you should, you know, I hope I've changed your mind somewhat about it.
00:22:39
Speaker
This has been fun.
Closing Thoughts on Valentine's Day
00:22:41
Speaker
I kind of just wanted to talk about Valentine in general just because it's...
00:22:46
Speaker
what's happening in my life right now and discover a few things about it.
00:22:52
Speaker
But I guess it's just turned into a preachy thing where I'm just like, if you're not celebrating Valentine's, there's something wrong with you, okay?
00:23:01
Speaker
And who knows next year what things are?
00:23:05
Speaker
I hate Valentine's.
00:23:07
Speaker
I went for a Galentine's night and it was awesome.
00:23:10
Speaker
You don't need to listen to me.
00:23:12
Speaker
Who am I to tell you what to do?
00:23:14
Speaker
You guys have been fantastic.
00:23:15
Speaker
Like I said, I'm out and about.
00:23:17
Speaker
So I really need to wind this up and get out.
00:23:23
Speaker
I hope you had a beautiful Valentine's Day.
00:23:25
Speaker
And if not, I hope you have many beautiful Valentine's Day in the coming years, okay?
00:23:31
Speaker
Thank you for listening.
